The best solution for a modern interior would be a built-in fireplace with a laconic design. It can be placed in a wall niche or in any hollow structure, for example, in a decorative partition, bar counter or furniture shelf. Among the built-in fireplaces there are autonomous devices running on biofuel and electric models, which expands the possibilities of their use in the interior.

In the design of a bright kitchen-living room in the Scandinavian style, a rectangular bio-fireplace looks very appropriate. The pattern of flames adds coziness to a room with motifs of harsh northern nature and is in harmony with the textures of natural wood and stone in the decoration of the room.

There is no point in disputing the relevance of a fireplace in a charismatic living room in a modern style. But to make the interior look fashionable, it is better to give preference not to a vintage electric model with a black body, but to a bio-fireplace with an open fire. You can place it on a wide shelf of a functional storage system in the TV area.

Sometimes an original decorative solution can add a special charm to a strict “masculine” interior. In a futuristic setting, a modern electric fireplace with imitation of smoldering coals and ceramic logs in a firewood rack look unexpectedly appropriate and convincing.

The black niche, where the wood-burning fireplace is located, stands out effectively against the background of the gray decoration of the minimalist living room and creates an expressive horizontal line in the interior. It plays a dominant role in the setting and goes well with the wooden paneling of the TV area.
Biofireplaces
They are also called eco-fireplaces because they are a safe, latest-generation model with real fire. They run on vegetable fuel and do not produce soot, ash, smoke or even ash. Biofireplaces do not require the installation of a chimney, so they can be installed in any place convenient for you.
Some models of biofireplaces can be operated from a remote control. These are in the line of one of the most famous European brands Planica. The Fire Line Automatic 3 in Casing Glass model is not cheap, but it looks very impressive.

Fireplaces with a traditional portal in the living room interior
Another popular category of fireplaces is wall-mounted models with an architectural portal that beautifully frames the firebox. They are relevant in classic interiors, living rooms in Art Deco, Baroque, Empire, Country, Gothic and Provence styles. You can add a portal to a wood-burning, electric or bio-fireplace. And in combination with the portal, you can use an air humidifier with fire imitation.

A classic fireplace portal does not have to be decorated with rich carvings. The design of a living room in the neoclassical style will look much more impressive with a laconic fireplace frame. And you can complement it with paired sconces with white lampshades.
Materials used
Depending on what kind of firebox is installed in the fireplace, its body can be mounted from various materials. This question has to be asked by everyone who wants to receive such a miracle, since you cannot buy a ready-made wall in a store and you will have to do some of the work yourself.
- A wood-burning fireplace should be equipped in accordance with all the rules to ensure its safe operation. The portal is made of brick, and the firebox can be iron, cast iron or brick. There are options with separate fireboxes and a common chimney.
- Installing an electric fireplace is not difficult, since it is enough to use a heat-resistant type of plasterboard and using the profile you can create any geometry of the wall and portal. The same materials are used for biofireplaces.
- It is impossible to make a hanging fireplace with a double-sided firebox yourself. This product is made of metal and plastic in the factory and requires only correct installation from the owner of the house.

Fireplaces with panoramic fireboxes in the living room interior
Fireplaces with panoramic fireboxes, allowing you to admire the play of flames from three sides, are among the most popular today. Such models are usually used in the design of multifunctional living rooms, where they serve to zone space. They can be installed in a partition or act as an independent element of the interior - it all depends on the concept of the design project and the layout of the room.

Advantages and disadvantages
Island fireplace
An island fireplace, also known as a “central” fireplace, differs from the usual design in that it is not adjacent to the walls or partitions of the room in which it is located. Before you decide to install this type of fireplace, you should familiarize yourself with its characteristics.
Advantages:
- Attractive appearance;
- Suitable for modern design rooms;
- Allows you to admire the structure from anywhere in the room, as well as accommodate a large number of people around it;
- Easy installation. Installation of some types can be carried out in an already fully constructed room.
Despite the aesthetic design and ease of installation, this type of fireplace also has its disadvantages.
Flaws:
- Occupies quite a large space;
- The room in which the fireplace will be located must be protected from drafts, and there must be no furniture or interior items in the immediate area for safety reasons;
- The heating capabilities of such units are less powerful than those of their classic counterparts.
As you can see, the main function of an island fireplace is to create a certain ambiance rather than use it to heat a room.
Classification
Today, all changes are associated with a transformation of appearance, since the main task of fireplaces is becoming a decorative decoration, which can often boast of its functionality. The fireplace cannot go unnoticed, so its design is developed taking into account the stylization of the entire room.
In the classification of devices according to installation method, an island fireplace falls into a separate type. These models arose thanks to modern artistic solutions. There was a need to complement the modern and high-tech styles. Naturally, a classic fireplace could be designed in the same spirit, but it is not able to emphasize the revolutionary nature of ideas, a revolution in the idea of a modern interior.
All island fireplaces can be divided into two categories, which have certain distinctive nuances in installation methods: floor-standing and hanging models. The common properties of these groups is that they are installed in the center of the room and do not have common walls with the walls of the room. The idea of installing an island fireplace is successfully implemented in large rooms, since the occupied space must be fully compensated.
Triangular design
Country style
These types of fireplaces usually have an oblong wooden beam, which is located in the upper part. The wide lower part gives the entire structure a D-shape. When finishing the outside of the chimney, gypsum material is used, and the portal area is framed with stone, such as sandstone.

How to install
Island units have significant differences from typical fireplaces. Due to this, before the product is purchased and subsequent installation is carried out, it is necessary to understand in detail the basic fire safety requirements, which must be strictly observed during installation.
Hanging option with open firebox
It should be understood that it is better to entrust this process to an experienced specialist, because if the oven is not located according to the rules, then operating the product is strictly prohibited. Almost every store offers the services of a specialist who is familiar with a specific model and also has experience installing fireplaces in different rooms.
Good to know: Ready-made garden fireplaces and options for building them yourself
Among the basic rules for home and apartment that should be taken into account during installation are the following:
- Wood-burning, electric and biofuel types of fireplaces can be installed in the room, provided that its area is at least 30 square meters. If this rule is not followed, residents will feel discomfort, because the structure itself is of impressive size and will occupy the bulk of the usable space.
- Before installation, you need to pay attention to the total weight of the structure. If the manufacturer claims a weight of 400 kg or more, then such fireplaces should be installed on a pre-poured foundation.
- When installing open-type fireplaces, you must ensure that there are no drafts in the room, otherwise ash or embers will fly around the house and a fire may break out.
- The foundation itself must be poured before partitions and floors appear in the room where the fireplace is planned to be installed.
- When installing suspended and floor-mounted structures, special attention is paid to the correct and uniform distribution of the weight of the fireplace across the floors. To increase the strength of the surface, it can be covered with a sheet of rolled iron, or a screed can be applied.
- All interior items, including furniture and decorative elements, as well as textiles, must be located no closer than one meter from the open fireplace insert, otherwise there is a risk of fire.
A closed central (island) fireplace has less power compared to units with an open firebox. In the second case, it is necessary to ensure that the structure has certain safety elements, for example, sides that will prevent embers from falling onto the floor.
Special option for the kitchen
Manufacturers classify closed island fireplaces as high-tech structures. That is why, regardless of the brand and company, almost every design is equipped with an efficient combustion and air supply system, which saves fuel.
Installation of any fireplace is divided into two stages. The first stage is characterized by the choice of location, and the second - by technical work. An island fireplace has certain requirements for its location. They mainly concern issues of safe operation.
- A concrete screed is made on the foundation, which will form the basis of the future fireplace. A small platform made of heat-resistant material should be placed on the floor around the portal. It will look aesthetically pleasing and will protect the floor from fire in case of excessive heating of the housing.
- The chimney outlet through the ceiling and roof must be insulated. For this you can use ready-made sandwich pipes. If this is not possible, then mineral wool, which has excellent insulating properties, is placed in the space between the chimney and the ceiling.
- The central fireplace should be arranged so that it is not in the path of the room. You can move the structure in any direction, but up to certain limits. The distance from the fireplace body to the wall should not be reduced to one meter. For the same reasons, you should remove from the fireplace all objects that can become deformed when exposed to high temperatures.
High-tech style
Fireplaces of this style are characterized by the combination of several types of materials: various combinations of glass, metal, steel or wooden elements. A fireplace in this style should have extremely sharp right angles and a simple, standard shape.
The Spanish brand Traforart produces fireplaces that look stylish and modern. The Rac model can be placed near a wall.
