One of her favorite techniques is the use of sliding doors that look like they were borrowed from barns. She may not have come up with it herself, but she always succeeds in implementing it very well. Take a look and you too will become a big fan of these interior barn doors!

Now that I have my own home, I have already added the installation of such a “sliding” door to my list of important things to do. Take a look at these impressive examples and tell us which one made the strongest impression on you? I personally have my eye on the last option...

Installation

Making barn-type doors is only part of the job; they still need to be installed by hanging them from a track. When opening and closing, the canvas moves using carriages and rollers. Rail fastenings are loved by designers because they can withstand greater loads than hinges. This property is useful when filling very wide openings or when zoning a space with a partition door.

In most cases there is no lock, although you can install one if you want more privacy.

Peculiarities

Everyone is accustomed to swinging barn products, but recently sliding attributes have been increasingly entering the market. Doors of this model can be used in different styles - modern, minimalism, hi-tech. You just need to choose a door design that suits your interior.

Barn doors have some features that make them different from conventional interior structures:

  • The canvas is made from several materials: wooden boards, tempered glass, stainless steel, durable plastic.
  • The wooden door can be painted in different shades or varnished.
  • The guide is created from a reliable metal rail, since the blade can be heavy.
  • There is a stopper on the top track to prevent the door from falling off the track.
  • The rollers can be changed depending on the design of the room: chrome elements are suitable for the modern style, and massive cast iron parts will be appropriate for a rustic interior.
  • Modern mechanisms allow barn products to move without unnecessary noise and very easily.

Mechanism

A barn door can be with or without glass, decorated with various decorative elements, or just a simple hung panel. All this makes no sense if a well-designed and smoothly operating mechanism is not provided.

The upper track is made in various geometric shapes:

  • circle;
  • hexagon;
  • Latin letter J;
  • rectangle.

The door moves based on rollers fixed either at the upper end or on the upper outer part (special plates are used for this).

The upper track is equipped with side limiters, which sometimes act as dampers. The lower guide brackets in the shape of the letter P, which are made slightly wider than the leaf itself, help to avoid the hanging door jerking to the side. Another option is a block in the shape of the letter T, which fits into a groove in the canvas itself.

Stylish examples in the interior

Barn doors reveal all their beauty in spacious apartments with high ceilings and lofts converted from old production workshops. In addition to the door leaf itself, which can be made in many ways, the mechanism itself also carries a decorative load. With the appropriate approach, the guide strip, rollers and places where they are attached to the door can claim to be a separate art object.

When creating a door, the master is faced with a non-trivial task: putting together the shape and texture of the canvas, choosing a color, adequately decorating the fittings in such a way that the entire structure fits perfectly into the interior of the home, finds its place and looks completely natural.

Types of sliding systems

One of the important components of the mechanism, regardless of whether you make a sliding door yourself or not, is the type of system used. In fact, the sliding system is a set of guides and frames for the canvas. This is a typical frame structure. Do-it-yourself interior sliding doors. There are two main types of modern devices:

The iron structure is stronger. Install sliding doors with your own hands, sliding doors, installation. In order to make an interior sliding door with your own hands, you will need exactly this type. The mechanism is able to withstand enormous loads, but at the same time it is rougher and louder.

The duralumin system is more aesthetically presentable and less noisy. It is suitable for lightweight partitions, for example, made of glass or polycarbonate. This mechanism is ideal for a bathroom or locker room.

There is another type of similar structures - hanging doors. Using such a mechanism, you can simply make sliding doors on rollers with your own hands. This is a frameless device because the canvas is suspended from above and slides along the gap thanks to rollers in the guide.

It is better not to use very heavy canvases; you can install a door made of polycarbonate, but at the same time you need to take care of its design.

Stage one: cutting the boards

Since the door in the presented project was created from scratch, the first step in the work was the following:

  • taking measurements;
  • marking;
  • sawing boards.

The simplest thing is to cut the boards to create a door leaf. You just need to cut the existing materials in accordance with the desired door height. The number of boards is determined by the desired width of the door leaf.

The decorative frame in the presented project consists of thin boards joined at right angles. Accordingly, no difficulties with marking and cutting will arise either. The middle strip is cut out in the same way as the upper and lower frame parts.

But the diagonal strips decorating the upper and lower sections of the door are sawn at an angle. It is not so easy to make such a cut with a simple tool; it is better to use a Miter box.

Design options

Familiar wooden structures fit perfectly into rooms decorated in the following styles:

They are also applicable in vintage, rustic, even industrial styles - but provided that the design is approached in good faith and thought through deeply.

If a rustic style is used in the interior, the door must be equipped with heavy cast iron rollers.

What it is?

Barn doors are usually used in utility and domestic buildings:

  • sheds and home workshops;
  • children's houses;
  • baths.

Their advantage is quite obvious: even if everything outside is covered with deep snowdrifts, opening the door is not particularly difficult. But such structures can also be used in urban housing, primarily for aesthetic reasons. The entrance block made of solid wood, placed on metal guides, often turns into the semantic center of the interior.

At the same time, barn doors save space, and even despite occupying an empty wall, they are ideal for small-sized homes.

There is nothing strange about that - the canvas simply slides into the prepared pencil case and does not interfere with people. Experts recommend installing a barn door in the passage from the kitchen to the living room, as it provides high traffic flow.

Important: by installing it in the bedroom, you will be able to place the bed right at the entrance. If desired, options are available with sliding mechanisms consisting of several panels at the same time, folding to one side of the opening.

In any case, the barn door is visually striking and expressive. To make her canvases, not only solid wood is used, but also glass, plastic, and even metal.

Canvas

The next fundamental point is the choice of the canvas itself; it can be made from different materials:

The choice should be made based on the purpose of the door and the selected fittings. Do-it-yourself sliding doors: installation, installation. For example, it is best to make interior doors from MDF or wood, but for zonal purposes, partitions made of polycarbonate, tempered glass or plastic are suitable. In other words, light and even translucent materials are perfect for the bathroom, living room, and dressing room.

To make sliding doors, for example, from polycarbonate, you will need a piece of material the size of the door opening. If you are making a frame, a product a couple of cm smaller in size will do. For external installation, not in the wall, you should cut out, on the contrary, a larger piece. The canvas is fixed in the frame of the sliding system.

How to make a sliding door under the bathroom? For this, it is best to use small pieces of plastic or polycarbonate. The sliding door will slide in the grooves of the profile.

Manufacturing

The very first step is laying the boards into the frame; Tapered boards 25 cm wide are preferred for frame structures.

According to most craftsmen, it is necessary to connect the boards using the “half-tree” technique. Its essence is simple: a cutout is made at one end, which allows you to connect the element to another board.

After making several half-thick cuts in the right place, use a hammer and a wide chisel to remove the wood and trim the joint. Having assembled the finished kit, you can immediately install it, hang the lock, and so on.

Making a door always involves selecting the material: home craftsmen have the right to use both coniferous and deciduous wood.

The final choice depends on:

  • financial capabilities;
  • available tools;
  • external or internal placement of doors;
  • using them in a room with normal or high humidity.

Oak wood is beautiful and durable, but it is difficult to process, and the cost is not the most forgiving. It, as well as beech wood, is best used at the entrance to the house. It is better to cover interior structures with a canvas made of simpler types of wood - pine, birch, spruce.

A barn door is almost always assembled from parallel boards held in place by slats running perpendicularly or diagonally.

Take the selection of fasteners extremely seriously. Any nail must firmly fix the board or plank, but not go through. After the design blank is knocked together, it is tried on at the desired opening, and the excess is cut off.
