Wooden entrance doors - types, shapes, sizes and material features. 100 photos of outdoor exterior door models

Installation of wooden doors often turns out to be quite expensive, and besides, searching and waiting for a specialist is very tiring. In fact, installing a wooden door with a frame, provided you know the basic principles of installation, is very simple and anyone can handle this task. The concept of a “wooden door” is very broad; it refers to interior, entrance products with a swing or sliding opening mechanism. They can be installed in residential premises (house, cottage, apartment, office), or they can be installed in general purpose premises (warehouse, basement). In this regard, the installation methods for this interior detail also differ.

Where to start the installation process?

Before we talk about how to install a wooden door, it is important to pay attention to its type. For example, the installation of sliding products differs from the installation of swing products. If we compare interior products with entrance ones, then the installation process is virtually the same, there is only a slight difference in the presence of a threshold for the latter.

Almost always a frame is attached to a wooden front door. Before installation, the opening should be cleared of debris, dust, and pieces of plaster that barely hold on. When these preparatory works are completed, you can begin the main process.

Array

Solid natural wood is a timeless classic. It looks great, adds solidity to the room, is environmentally friendly, and will serve faithfully for many years.

It could be called the best choice, if not for a number of disadvantages:

  • Firstly, this is the price - natural wood is expensive, and not everyone can afford it.
  • Secondly, the manufacturer’s integrity: violation of the rules for drying wood will affect the durability of the door.
  • Third, wood does not like moisture, so you should not install doors made of this material in the bathroom.
  • Finally, the weight: it's quite significant.

When choosing, consider the type of wood: pine and other conifers are more accessible and common, but are not very durable. The highest quality doors are made from oak, beech or walnut, but you will have to pay more for them.

Entrance door installation

If the question arises - how to install a wooden entrance door, then it is important to follow the following installation procedure:

Doorway

  1. The box is fixed in the opening. Wooden wedges are used for this.
  2. The correct position of the door is determined using a building level. It is necessary to pay attention that the upper crossbar, as well as the threshold, are placed horizontally, respectively, the side crossbars are placed strictly vertically.
  3. It is necessary to make holes in them in such a way that small marks are made on the opening. It is best to use special wood drills in such cases.
  4. Now you can remove the box. Holes for fastening are made in those places where there are marks.
  5. If there are concrete walls, during such installation you should use a concrete drill, taking into account the selection of a diameter that matches the thickness of the dowels used.
  6. The dowels are hammered into the resulting holes, after which the box returns to its previous position.
  7. Install self-tapping screws and screw them into the dowels. However, there is no need to rush into delaying it. They are tightened only after checking the position of the door frame according to the vertical, horizontal, and diagonals.
  8. The hinges are applied to the opening at a distance of about twenty centimeters from the edges of the end of the door leaf, and outlined with a pencil.
  9. On your own, using a chisel, you need to select places for future hinges, after which they are varnished.
  10. The loops are again applied to the places marked for the screws. Marks for the latter are made with a small drill. Now the loops can be attached to the canvas.
  11. The structure is then inserted into the box. The location of the loops is marked and the loops are screwed.

    Door hinges

  12. The installation of the wooden entrance door has been completed. The next stage is plastering or sealing gaps, if any, as well as installing the filling of the product itself.

How to install an interior door made of wood?

Typically, sellers of interior products offer their goods not with an already made box, but with certain parts for self-assembly. Thus, the buyer must:

  • Lay the product on the floor, placing it with the packaging material between the racks.
  • Attach a transverse jumper to the side posts, then cut it off, measuring the required length.
  • Using a miter box, trim the ends. They are connected using self-tapping screws after the mounting holes for them have been drilled.
  • The canvas is placed in the resulting box. Now all this is placed on the end, and hinges are also installed in the marked place. At the end, as well as on the stand of the box, it is necessary to make markings according to their position.
  • The following steps should be similar to those performed for installing wooden input analogues.

How to install a wooden door to other rooms?

Installing a door to any other premises (warehouses, bathhouses, utility rooms) with your own hands is also quite simple. In such cases, special arrow loops are often used. Installation of such a plan is much easier; there is no need to make recesses in the wood for them. Such products are more susceptible than others to the influence of natural phenomena, in particular high humidity, and accordingly swell after some time of service. They are easy to remove and adjust again to the desired box size. The technology for installing such a product for such premises is the simplest.

Sliding mechanism

How to install a wooden sliding door?

At first glance, assembling a sliding structure seems to be a simpler process than installing a wooden door with a frame. The whole point is that there is no need to carefully adjust the structure to the given dimensions. The sliding door is located in front of the opening, and not inside it, as in the first case. However, there are also difficulties here. For example, it is necessary that the finished structure does not jam during operation, that there are no distortions, etc.

The sliding door installation process is carried out according to these instructions:

  1. About seven centimeters above the opening you need to carefully secure a large wooden beam. Its length is twice the width of the door.
  2. You need to screw a metal guide to the beam, the length of which is similar to the length of the beam. The corresponding parts for the mechanism must be inserted there. The ends of this guide are then closed with limiter plugs.
  3. To ensure that the blade is aligned with the rollers, metal brackets should be secured to its upper edge.
  4. To fix the door in the “vertical” position, along the entire distance at the bottom of the leaf, you need to make a groove for the movement of the lower rolling mechanism.
  5. The brackets are then connected to the carriages for a while, and the door is pre-hung in its future location.
  6. When installing the bottom guide, you need to slightly tilt the blade from the vertical position. The roller must be inserted into the groove and immediately carefully moved until it stops. Next, the marking of its positions is done. The conductor is then screwed to the floor.

To complete the installation of this type of structure, you must adhere to the following order: the door leaf is placed immediately with a groove on the roller from below, and then secured from above.

External covering

On top of the inner filler there is a layer of decorative material. It is through it that the door comes into contact with the environment - so you should not be irresponsible in choosing it.

PVC film is distinguished by a rich variety of colors and patterns, including imitation of other materials. At the same time, it is very resistant to chemical and mechanical influences, which makes it one of the best choices.

Veneer is a budget finishing option that is not inferior to natural wood in decorative characteristics. It is durable, practical, quite durable and not afraid of moisture. In other words, a veneer door is universal and can be installed in any room.

The material allows for many finishing options. The price of the door is influenced by the type of veneer used - natural or synthetic. The first is a thin, up to 1 cm, section of wood; the second, also known as eco-veneer, is fibers bonded with synthetic resins.

Laminate is not afraid of moisture and temperature changes, and has an attractive appearance with imitation wood. A laminated door can be easily cleaned with chemicals. With all the advantages, the price remains very affordable.

The door leaf can be completely or partially made of glass. Colored glass is often used, sometimes decorated with patterns - this allows you to achieve very interesting effects.

Modern laminated triplex glass is highly durable, and even broken glass does not pose a great danger. The main disadvantage of this design is poor sound insulation.

What to do if the door block and the opening do not fit together?

In some cases, even when purchasing a product with ideal dimensions, it may happen that in the end the door block will not fit the parameters of the opening. Don't despair! Getting it to the right size is not that difficult. If the box is larger than the opening, then the upcoming task is to increase the opening. This is easy to do using a hammer drill or grinder. In the opposite case, when the box is much smaller than the opening, it can be easily reduced using cement and brick.

If small openings remain after installation, this can be corrected using polyurethane foam. This process also gives the structure greater strength. A more aesthetic and modern look of the product is achieved using modern installation panels. Such accessories are made from both wood and fiberboard.

Artificial materials

MDF offers one of the best combinations of price and quality. This material has a number of undoubted advantages: strength, moisture resistance, environmental friendliness, ease of processing. Doors of the most complex configurations are made from it. A heavier alternative to MDF is chipboard.

Cellular cardboard, for all its cheapness, is extremely unstable to mechanical stress - a thin door made of it can be broken through by accidentally hitting it.

Plastic and aluminum are durable and moisture-resistant materials, which makes a door made from them a good choice for a bathroom. They stand out for their spectacular appearance and are available in various colors.

How to properly install hardware in a wooden door?

No door is complete without fittings, so the final stage is installing a lock in the door leaf. The following tools are required for installing fittings:

  • chalk;
  • drill;
  • file;
  • pencil;

    Using a hammer when installing doors and slopes

  • hammer;
  • screwdrivers;
  • set of drills;
  • chisels.

First of all, you need to choose the height for the lock that is most convenient for use. After this determination, the lock rests its back surface against the end of the blade. Draw a contour along the edges, make holes using a drill to a depth exactly equal to the dimensions of the lock. Using tools such as a hammer and chisel, the residue is then removed. After the lock is placed in the resulting opening, you should measure according to the front bar, then make indentations. As a result, the outer surface should completely coincide with the end of the canvas.

The lock is carefully inserted into the hole. This item is screwed tightly to the door with two screws. The core of the lock is inserted and secured with a special bolt, usually supplied with the lock itself. Now you need to check the functionality of the lock. To do this, you just need to insert the key into the keyhole and turn it several times. If this process is carried out easily without difficulties, then everything is working correctly.

Provided that everything is functioning well, you need to cut out a hole where the lock tongue will be located. To ensure this step is done correctly, it is lightly coated with chalk. When closing the door, the key is turned in the lock several times, as if the lock were opened and closed again. This process will leave a mark on the lock tongue. Based on this mark, a groove is cut to the depth of the tongue. Now the overlay is carefully fixed, which corresponds to the location of the box.

Folding

This type of design is noticeably more complex than alternative options. The door is an accordion-style door that folds when opened. They do not take up extra space, which makes the folding door an average between swing and sliding interior doors.

The weak point of the design is the hinges, or more precisely, their number. To make them last longer, it is recommended to install double-leaf doors instead of single-leaf ones: then there will be less load on the hinges of each half. Ideally, a door should not have more than two hinges.

What can be done to improve the performance of a wooden door?

In order to protect a wooden product from moisture and dust, the canvas must be coated with special paint or varnish. A high-quality protective coating will significantly extend the life of the product. To increase thermal insulation and sound insulation, it is advisable to insert high-quality rubber seals around the entire perimeter. The strength of the structure ultimately depends not on how strong the canvas itself is or how reliable the lock is, but on how correctly the installation is done. But the fittings are also important. It is selected taking into account the quick opening of the door in an emergency.

In general, installing a door with a frame yourself will not require any special costs or special skills.

Swing

Such doors can probably be found in every home, which is not surprising: this is the most structurally simple and universal solution.

As a rule, interior options have one leaf; double doors are found only between the spacious hallway and the living room or dining room. If necessary, they are supplemented with a lock, latch or other locking mechanism.
