Features of choosing curtains in the attic

It is worth considering some nuances:

  • For windows facing south, use curtains with a special reflective lining that prevents fading and heating.
  • It is equally important to choose a fabric that does not accumulate dirt and dust particles.
  • For small attic spaces, it is advisable to use laconic curtains with a simple design.
  • For sloping windows, it is better to choose curtains made of denser fabrics, since a powerful stream of sunlight falls on them.

Design of dormer windows with sloping ceilings, features, design options

Until relatively recently, a room under a roof was considered suitable exclusively for technical needs. But over time, it became clear that the attic is a unique place, especially for creative individuals, because a unique atmosphere reigns there. This means that this room also needs creative decoration.

If you show some creativity and imagination, then such decoration will become real and exciting.

Curtains for attic rooms must meet the following requirements.

  • If the attic “looks” towards the south, then you should give preference to curtains lined with reflective properties.
  • It is better to choose a material that does not accumulate dust and dirt between the fibers.
  • If the attic room is of modest size, then the curtain should be extremely laconic.
  • If the window in the attic room has a slope, then the canvas should be dense, because in this case the flow of sunlight is more intense.

Types of curtains for attics

There are many designs to choose from. Among them you can always find something suitable to your taste.

Blinds

They transmit sunlight perfectly or completely block it. Quite often, both horizontal and vertical lamellas of various colors and shades are used. Also, for attics, pleated curtains with a special coating are chosen to create a reflective effect.

Roman

Laconic and compact. They can be made of thick or translucent fabrics, plain or decorated with a wide variety of prints.

Rolled

Allows you to save space in the room. They are easily attached to the frame and make it possible to freely adjust the level of illumination in the room.

Curtains (tulle, veil, etc.)

They make the interior elegant and give it some zest. Sometimes they are supplemented with holders, decorative tiebacks or other accessories that add even more originality to the curtains.

Curtains

They will create a warm and cozy atmosphere and are an ideal option for decorating an attic space. In addition, traditional curtains go well with other types of curtains. To hold them, special grabs and additional elements are used.

Blackout

Close the room from light and darken it by 80-90%. Perfect for organizing a day out.

Location and shape of windows

Despite the complex shapes, there are many decoration options.

With sloping ceiling

Curtains on a sloping cornice will look great. To regulate lighting, tiebacks in the form of ribbons, tassels or fabric strips are used. This curtain composition will especially emphasize the unusual shape of the slanting window.

Windows with bevel (sloping)

For such window openings, blinds, roller blinds and regular curtains made of loose materials are suitable. Fabric panels placed on sloping windows will create a very cozy and romantic atmosphere in the room.

Triangular windows

Pleated curtains or curtains with hooks, evenly distributed along one side of a triangular window opening, will allow you to decorate such windows without limiting your imagination.

Trapezoidal

Compact roller or pleated curtains are perfect for trapezoidal windows. When using fabric curtains, the main thing is to choose the right cornice.

For large windows

Curtains made of translucent, airy materials, such as organza or veil, on the ceiling cornice, when decorating large panoramic windows, look elegant and harmoniously complement the interior.

Arched window

The best solution would be curtains that are connected in the center of the upper part of the window opening. To complete the picture, be sure to use tiebacks.

Round

On such a window, any curtain options look organic. The only thing is that some straight models of curtains, when closed, will not be able to emphasize the original shape of the window.

Ceiling

Transformable ceiling windows in the roof are quite an interesting interior detail; Roman or roller blinds are suitable for them.

How to install?

The installation of attic curtains depends on their type and the design features of the windows themselves. As an example, we can consider attaching fabric curtains with two curtain rods. The process of installing cornices will not take much time.

  1. First, install the upper rod, making sure that it is located symmetrically with respect to the upper edge of the window opening.
  2. Make two or three holes for attaching the rod.
  3. Then a rod is installed in them and fasteners are fixed for pickup.
  4. If side fasteners are used instead of bottom fasteners, it is enough to drill one hole for each of them.
  5. The cornices are installed and secured with reliable fasteners.
  6. After they are installed, you can hang the curtains and secure them with a second curtain rod or clamp.

Roller blinds are attached to skylights in two ways, while fixing the panel at the bottom of the frame. You can install aluminum guides on the frame itself, then tuck the panel into them on the sides. This way it will fit better to the window, eliminating gaps and sagging.

If the curtain design has hooks, the roll is secured at the top and then fixed during lowering in any of the three positions where there are hooks.

Material for attic curtains

A huge variety of materials allows you to create an appropriate and attractive image of curtains.

Paper

Used to make pleated curtains. Original paper accordion designs are ideal for those who want to design a window opening in a non-standard way.

Bamboo

Bamboo blinds have an individual and extravagant look. This design of attic window openings will give the room lightness and sophistication.

Plastic

Plastic slats provide a stylish design and original appearance to windows of almost any shape. In addition, this material is durable and environmentally friendly. Blinds are very practical, easy to use, maintain and clean.

Metal

Metal products are durable, do not deform and are quite easy to care for. However, such models heat up easily. Therefore, they are not recommended for installation on windows facing south.

Fabrics (tulle, organza, linen, cotton)

Fabric sheets will give the interior a complete look. There are no specific criteria for choosing material for curtains. The only thing is that the density of the fabric will depend on which side the windows are located.

Ideas in different styles

Attic curtains should be in harmony with the overall style and interior of the room.

Classic

The combination of tulle with curtains will transform the atmosphere, add elegant notes and create an aura of comfort in a classic interior. To fasten such curtains, double curtain rods or clamps are used, and the original design is complemented with tiebacks or clips.

Loft

The loft-style attic floor should be well lit. Therefore, simple monochromatic curtain designs with a predominantly smooth or metallized surface are used here.

Provence

Light and airy curtains made of light fabric with unobtrusive floral patterns will perfectly transmit sunlight and harmonize with the entire interior of the room.

Country

Not too bright curtains made from natural materials look best. Calico, linen or cotton fabrics will help create coziness, comfort and a complete rural look.

Minimalism

This style welcomes simple geometric shapes. Roller blinds or blinds will add completeness to your interior design.

Scandinavian

Light curtains or blinds in pale, cool colors will look good here. Metal blinds can especially emphasize the asceticism of the Scandinavian style.

Chalet

The main principle of the chalet style is the use of only natural fabrics. Such curtains will create a cozy atmosphere and fit perfectly into the interior in the spirit of alpine mountain wooden houses.

Color spectrum

With the right color, the room takes on a truly exceptional look and you simply won’t want to leave such a room.

Beige

Conservative color. Curtains in such a noble, elegant and soothing beige color scheme create a calming and relaxing environment in the room.

Burgundy

A choice for a person with delicate taste. Burgundy curtains will bring special warmth to the room and evoke a feeling of stability and prosperity.

Pink

Gives the room a feeling of freshness, lightness, romance and adds optimism.

Blue

Deep color. Its association with coolness allows the use of blue curtains to decorate windows located on the south side.

Blue

Frosty and pure like snow. Canvases of this color visually increase the space of the room and the height of the walls.

Grey

An impartial and aloof color that is not conspicuous, but which can be elegant and reveal itself through a variety of complex shades.

Curtain designs and drawings

Bright images and large patterns on the curtains can enliven any interior.

Geometry (stripes, abstraction)

Geometric prints are the hottest trend. Striped curtains delight with their aesthetic simplicity, and all kinds of abstraction always look original and interesting.

Ornaments and patterns

Unusual designs add beauty and homeliness to the room. This decor attracts attention and becomes the highlight of any interior.

Flowers

Bright and multifunctional floral prints will add summer mood, romance, warmth and comfort to the interior.

With photo printing

They have only positive characteristics. They can easily decorate a room and give it a unique look, perfectly replacing a panel or painting.

Prints

Large bright patterns, small prints or no pattern at all? It's not just a matter of taste and style preferences. Bright large drawings enliven the space, but at the same time they can visually reduce or overload it. Therefore, such textiles are appropriate as the main color accent in a spacious room.

Geometric prints are almost a classic, which will also help adjust the shape of the room. Vertical lines visually lift the ceiling, while horizontal lines make the room wider. Use these optical illusions to create the right shape for your room.

Floral designs will be appropriate in interiors decorated in the spirit of country, Provence, eco or even classic.

Photos in the interior of the rooms

It is curtains that allow you to achieve a holistic design of the room.

Bedroom

Any option is suitable for the bedroom, the choice depends only on the style of the room. These can be either strict blinds, Roman or roller blinds, or curtains sewn from flowing fabric, complemented by accessories in the form of tiebacks.

Children's room

It is not advisable to use complex colors and patterns. Canvases made from natural fabric in calm shades, with their elegant simplicity, will add tenderness to the interior, both in a room for a girl and a boy.

Colors

As you know, textiles can hopelessly ruin the interior, or, conversely, become a decisive color accent. Let's start with the most popular shade - beige. This is a universal choice for any interior style. Conservatism and nobility - these are the thoughts that arise when you see curtains in this shade. They emphasize coziness and create a relaxed atmosphere in the room. Burgundy is a bright, active color that has again been at the peak of popularity in the last few seasons. Textiles in this shade will add respectability to the interior. But you shouldn’t hang it in a small room; the active color will reduce the space even more.

If you have a bedroom in the attic, try to include pink curtains in the interior; this calm shade sets you in a romantic mood and makes the room lighter and airier.

Pay attention to where the windows face. The south side can be safely decorated with textiles in cool shades: blue, light blue and gray will come in handy. For a large area, you can choose a deeper, rich blue, but in a small room it is better to hang curtains in light neutral colors: blue and gray. By the way, the latter, like beige, will suit any style.

Horizontal blinds

Curtain mounting options

They should highlight the appearance of the curtains and ensure comfortable use.

On the eyelets

Fastening with grommets is suitable for inclined windows of the correct shape, with a lock or an upper and lower cornice.

Velcro

Allows you to easily design complex-shaped dormer windows. Using Velcro, the curtain is securely fixed in the desired position.

On hooks

This fastening does not imply the use of a cornice. Wall hooks are ideal for lightweight curtains.

Additional accessories

To beautifully hang curtains or tulle, you will need additional accessories. Draperies need cornices: simple or figured, depending on the type of room. For windows located on a slope, additional fastenings are needed: they will avoid sagging. You can use clamps when framing the window: then the fabric will hang in beautiful folds. For thick fabric it is better to use eyelets.

Roller blinds and other more modern types of curtains can be equipped with an electric drive. Then they will rise and fall using the remote control. Adjustment will become simpler and more convenient. This is especially important if the room has high ceilings or windows.

Decor ideas

Decorating curtains should be not only beautiful, but also functional.

Lambrequins

They will add luxury to the attic space. However, such decor can only be used if there are high ceilings and an abundance of natural light.

Tiebacks

For traditional curtains, tiebacks are often used. They not only create aesthetic folds, but also allow you to conveniently fix the canvas.

Holders

These decorative elements allow you to adjust the level of lighting in the room. In addition, when they are used, the curtains form a certain silhouette.
