Crew and living conditions

The ship's crew consisted of 284 people, including 19 officers, 17 conscripts and 248 sailors and foremen of conscript service[29]. In order to save weight of hull structures, the project abandoned the central supply of hot water to the crew, replacing it with local heating; facilitated air and steam heating; reduced stock of supplies and consumables. Compared to Project 41 destroyers, the areas and volumes of residential and service premises were reduced, which worsened the overall habitability of the Project ships[29][45]. The specific area of ​​living quarters per member was reduced compared to the prototype (from 1.6 m²/person to 1.3 m²/person) and was comparable to the specific area of ​​living quarters on a Project 30bis destroyer[46].

The crew, as on the Project 41 ship, was housed in two residential complexes or blocks (bow and stern), separated by engine and boiler rooms and auxiliary machinery compartments). Each of the blocks had autonomous sanitary equipment. Heating of the premises was provided by calorific heating (instead of steam heating pads), which significantly improved the regulation of the temperature regime of the living compartments in the conditions of the Far North[46].

The ship had 13 cabins for officers, including ten doubles and three singles (for the commander of the ship, his senior assistant and for the assistant and deputy for political affairs), all officer cabins, except the commander's cabin, had bunk beds. All officer cabins were concentrated in the bow block. To accommodate the chief petty officers, there were three 4-, 6- and 8-berth cabins in the aft block, as well as officer cabins equipped with stationary bunk beds. The block of officers' cabins and chief petty officers' cabins each had their own wardroom[46]. The officers' mess was quite spacious and was located in the bow superstructure, as on Project 41 it occupied almost its entire volume at the level of the upper deck. The wardroom of the chief petty officers was located in the block of their living quarters[45].

To accommodate personnel on the destroyer, there were eight cockpits designed (if you count from the bow itself (No. 1)) for 18, 9, 24, 30, 47, 48, 39 and 33 people, respectively. Six cockpits were located on the upper intermediate deck, cockpits No. 3 and No. 4 were located on the second intermediate deck. The cabins were equipped with three-tier bunks; there were also 10 hanging bunks. Under the middle superstructure there were shower teams, which were extremely cramped (they could accommodate no more than 11 people at a time). All showers and washbasins had autonomous electric water heaters. A laundry room was located next to the team showers. According to the combat schedule, the team showers with a locker room and laundry were to be used as an anti-chemical treatment post. The ship had only one desalination plant, and the supply of washing water was reduced by 9 tons compared to Project 41 (up to 21 tons[46], according to other sources - up to 22.8 tons[27]).

Seaworthiness and driving performance

Good seaworthiness of the ships of the project was achieved thanks to careful model testing in the TsAGI and TsNII-45 basins [32], as well as with the help of special measures, which included the installation of active steering stabilizers, side keels and two deep fuel tanks, raising the stem and raising the surface sides in the bow (1.5 m higher than those of Project 41)[21][32][47].

During the sea trials of the lead ship, which took place in the Baltic from December 2 to 16, 1955, with seas up to five points and winds up to eight points, the seaworthiness of the ship was tested. During the tests, it turned out that splashing of the bow artillery turret, bow and onboard SM-20-ZIF guns begins only with four-point seas and a speed of 18 knots. Target tracking for the ship's 130-mm artillery was lost at rolls of more than 20°. Preparations for mine laying could be carried out at speeds of up to 24 knots (at five-point seas, the permissible speed was reduced to 14 knots). There were similar restrictions on the use of stern bombers. At speeds above 24 knots with force five waves, the destroyer was “covered” by a cloud of spray[2]. In addition, the ships of the project were characterized by a decrease in stability at normal and full displacement[21]. However, the seaworthiness of Project 56 destroyers compared to destroyers of previous generations was significantly better, which was reflected in the positive assessment of the ship’s seaworthiness by its selection committee[26]. Metacentric height with normal displacement is 0.85 m [27].
