Gazebo with barbecue and grill: DIY construction

It would be nice to organize a cozy and comfortable place to relax at your summer cottage. We are talking about a gazebo with a table and chairs, equipped with a summer stove or barbecue. What could be better than spending an evening with family and friends in nature while cooking aromatic barbecue? To make your dream come true, you need to build a gazebo with a barbecue and grill on the territory. A wonderful structure will decorate the yard and become a source of pride for its owner.

Types of gazebos with barbecue

A similar construction with a barbecue, barbecue and stove is possible in four options:

  1. The brick gazebo has an attractive appearance, long service life and fire safety. It can be used all year round.
  2. The construction of a structure made of wood will cost less than one made of brick. If properly handled and maintained frequently, the gazebo will last a long time. The fire retardant impregnations on sale are environmentally friendly substances that provide excellent protection against fire.
  3. Combined gazebos are made from several materials. The cooking area is built from brick, and the resting area is made from wood. Such gazebos are characterized by special comfort, attractive appearance and functionality. The brick area can be decorated with tiles or other finishing materials at any time.
  4. Forged metal gazebos are mostly purchased ready-made or made to order. The price depends on the size and complexity of the model. Such structures will last a long time if they are covered with fire-resistant paint and primer.

Rain protection

There must be a roof over a brick oven. The main enemy of any oven is moisture and cold. Water (wet masonry and frosty precipitation) expands when it freezes. Therefore, at sub-zero temperatures it can tear not only masonry seams, but also destroy the brick itself.

Of course, adding cement to the traditional clay-sand mortar helps to partially reduce the negative. But this is protection from the moisture contained in the water. There is no way to isolate yourself from rain or wet snow in this way.

You will need a roof or some kind of canopy integrated into the design of the stove, or a separate gazebo. A gazebo is preferable because it can serve as:

  • cozy dining room;
  • living room;
  • or a summer kitchen, at least.

It's up to you to decide.

Negative sides

Barbecue ovens made of brick and stone for gazebos are quite large in size. There are miniature options, but they have their own design difficulties.

According to safety regulations, it is required to provide free space around the perimeter. The total area should be approximately 3 m².

In addition, stoves with barbecues and barbecues are prohibited from being built in gazebos that are made of flammable materials: the walls of the building can melt from the heat.

It is also important to provide for the installation of a chimney. In addition, if you plan to equip the outdoor oven with a smokehouse or hob, this will require additional space.

Pipe

It is not advisable to connect any furnaces to one pipe. This is realistic from a technical point of view. But it is fraught with the impossibility of simultaneous operation of all fireboxes united by a common chimney. This is critical for the heating system.

In a garden oven - acceptable. True, you will have to put up with the fact that even with an abundance of functions, you will not be able to use them at the same time. You'll have to choose one thing.

For this reason, most barbecues are equipped with separate chimneys. They just try to arrange them into one block - this makes it easier to remove them through the roof.

Types of bases

A garden house with a barbecue necessarily requires laying a separate foundation. It is prohibited to connect the base to the support of a nearby structure, as this risks its destruction due to uneven load.

A column foundation is the most common type of support for a gazebo. Its depth should be approximately 90 cm. Several bricks are laid on a cushion of crushed stone. Another pair of bars is placed perpendicular to the cement mortar. This allows you to raise the columns to a height of 20-30 cm above the ground surface.

When a gazebo is erected together with a dwelling on a pile foundation, this is especially convenient. It is also allowed to drive piles into the ground for construction.

A base made of bored rod elements is convenient because it does not require large expenses. Both asbestos pipes buried in the ground and a rolled sheet of roofing material can be concreted.

A shallow strip foundation is considered a traditional option. The process of its construction is quite labor-intensive, but it is especially popular. The depth of pouring the tape for the gazebo is no more than 40 cm.

The most reliable and durable foundation is a monolithic concrete slab. The construction of such a foundation will not be cheap, but the result is worth it.

After completing the foundation, you need to wait about a week for it to harden.

Subtleties of technology

You cannot build such a stove in city apartments. After all, this project requires:

  • large free area;
  • possibility of installing a chimney.

Accordingly, we are not talking about mass construction.

A stationary barbecue is a device that clearly gravitates towards rural spaces. Such a country attribute with some status flavor.

Now we will report on the general points of all projects.

Decorating the cutting table

A wooden or stone countertop must be ordered to match the size of the formed brickwork. We left protrusions of bricks under it - we lay the fitted tabletop on them. Waterproof silicone caulk is placed between the brick walls and the edge of the countertop. If desired, you can install a metal sink inside the countertop and supply water.

You can also make a tabletop yourself from a suitable size sheet of durable multi-layer plywood. It can be fixed to the brickwork with cement-sand mortar or special glue. You can lay tiles or porcelain tiles on top of durable plywood, which will make it more resistant to water and the vagaries of the weather. In addition, you can safely place hot dishes on such a countertop.

We make a grate and a coal tray

The coal pan can be welded or bent from sheet metal. We adjust it to fit the niche left in the brickwork. To ensure even and good heat, its height should be 10-15 centimeters. Holes can be made in the front of the tray for better air convection. By making a removable tray, you will greatly facilitate the process of cleaning the oven. It is inserted onto the lowest ledge, onto the bricks of the fourth row. A barbecue grill is installed on the next protruding bricks. The third brick projection is reserved to house the smokehouse.

We install the hood and chimney

These devices can be purchased ready-made, or you can make them yourself. They are mounted from sheet metal, the edges of which are fixed with riveting or a welding machine. In order to refine this part of the stove, the metal parts can be coated with paint that is resistant to high temperatures. To prevent smoke leakage, the joints of the metal parts are coated with heat-resistant sealant.

Please note that when a chimney passes through a roof, it must be insulated from flammable structures. To do this, the pipe in this place is wrapped with asbestos cardboard or non-flammable mineral wool. We install a protective device on the upper end of the pipe - a cone made of sheet metal - it will protect the chimney from the effects of precipitation.

We carry out finishing work

The foundation area in front of the furnace pediment is laid out with material that is resistant to falling coals and roughness. Porcelain stoneware tiles are ideal. It is fixed to the surface of the foundation with special glue.

The stove itself can be left unfinished, or it can be plastered or covered with decorative tiles using glue that is resistant to high temperatures. The stove can also be lined with facing bricks or tiles.

In addition to the cutting table, the stove for the gazebo can be supplemented with other elements. This could be a cast iron hob or a cauldron nest. The tabletop can be made of natural stone, and the structure itself can be supplemented with shelves and hooks.

A stone stove for a gazebo will become a favorite meeting place in your countryside and will give you many pleasant impressions.

Layout options and ideas

A gazebo on the site can be built completely open, organizing a resting place by the fireplace under one canopy, half-open and closed. When choosing an option, you need to take into account the time and financial costs of each. If the dimensions of the building allow, the stove is placed along one wall. A permanent structure can even replace it. In a small area, a corner location would be appropriate.

For several sources of fire they make a common hood, so they are located in close proximity to each other. The chimney must be designed in accordance with all the rules that exclude smoke in the direction of residential buildings.

The central place of the gazebo usually remains empty or occupied by a seating area. There is a table, chairs, and a sofa. If the building requires a portable brazier only for shish kebab or barbecue, it is installed in the middle, ensuring a good flow of smoke.

Interior design

The interior content and decor of the gazebo are of great importance both for maintaining the chosen style and for creating comfortable conditions for relaxation. You can do a lot of things to decorate it yourself, find it in the attic and even in a landfill.

Furniture

Distinctive features of furniture for gazebos in the loft style are simple design and massiveness. The upholstery of upholstered furniture is preferably plain, made of leather or leatherette, textiles with a rough texture.

The central element and bright accent of the decor will be the sofa. You can make it yourself from construction pallets, assembled into a single structure and fastened together with self-tapping screws. The wooden frame is impregnated with tinting stain or painted in light colors. For convenience, fabric-covered foam mattresses and pillows are placed on it.

Side tables made from pallets

If family or friendly feasts are expected in the gazebo, you need a large and massive dining table. There are any manufacturing options - from the already mentioned pallets to knocked down boards or wood cuts.

Metal rack

It would be very appropriate to use hanging chairs in such a gazebo - there is enough space, the ceilings are high, and the attachment to the ceiling beams is simple and reliable. You can use different models: wicker, forged, made of transparent plastic.

Hearth

What is a gazebo without a stove, fireplace or barbecue? This necessary and useful design element fits perfectly into the loft style. It can be brick, stone or metal, wall-mounted or free-standing, floor-mounted or suspended.

The main thing is to think about the form and execution, since a Russian stove or a classic fireplace with a portal will blur the impression of a carefully thought-out style solution.

Lighting

There should be a lot of lamps in such a gazebo, if only because of its large size - this style cannot be implemented in a small and low room.

The simplest solution is spotlights and spotlights on rods or tires. You don’t have to think too hard and just hang large incandescent lamps without shades. Although the stores have a large selection of lamps suitable for this style.

Pendant lights in the form of industrial lamps

But designer lamps made of wood, metal and improvised materials will look much more successful in the gazebo. Simple geometric or unusual shapes are welcome.

Lamps are hung on chains or ropes and attached to the walls with brackets. This is where everyone can show their talent as a designer by creating a chandelier with their own hands from water pipes, glass jars, boards, and even from concrete poured into a mold.

Here are some interesting ideas:

Decor

All kinds of art objects will not only decorate the gazebo, but also emphasize its unusual style.

In addition to original lamps, non-standard things can be used in the interior of this street building:

Decorate the gazebo with stands for flowerpots made of profile pipe, a large clock on the wall with an open mechanism, floor hangers made of driftwood, and animal skins on the floor.

Textile

If you use textiles in a gazebo of this kind, then only natural ones made from coarse fibers - matting, burlap, linen. There shouldn't be a lot of it. Instead of classic curtains, it is better to hang blinds or roller blinds in the openings to protect from the sun and wind. The color should match the furniture upholstery, rugs and other items.

Design stages

When drawing up a drawing, accurate measurements of all the parts that make up the structure are necessary. Any structure can only be assembled according to a ready-made step-by-step plan. At this stage, all the nuances of the future gazebo with a fireplace are provided for, and a budget is laid.

First of all, you need to decide on the type of construction, since the construction scheme for a summer and winter gazebo will be radically different. For any of the options, you will need a reliable foundation that can support supports, a canopy, stoves, and furniture. If the hearth is located inside the gazebo and is built of brick, it needs to be poured with a foundation.

At the initial design stage, the design of canopies, canopies or permanent roofs should also be taken into account. If the stove is located internally, the location and method of installing the chimney must be thought out in advance. A place for ventilation is also determined. For winter closed houses, the material and method of insulation are chosen.

Due to their light weight, wooden and forged structures do not require additional strengthening.

Requirements for outdoor stoves, approximate dimensions

An outdoor oven is built on a foundation. The floor on the fireplace side must have a fire-resistant coating in the form of sheet iron, ceramic, granite or concrete tiles in case of heat loss from the stove.

Bricks or stones are laid using a special masonry composition for stoves and fireplaces, or using a clay-cement mortar. The inside of the hearth is additionally lined with fireclay bricks using a mixture of clay and sand and the addition of cement.

Requirements for furnaces

Metal elements: decorative grilles, tray, dampers are installed only after the masonry has dried.

When operating a stove, you cannot use gasoline, kerosene, or alcohol to light firewood - this is dangerous because the accumulations of vapors of these liquids are explosive and can not only damage the structure, but also cause burns to a person.

There are no special conditions or requirements for construction and operation, the main thing is to make an effort, then the building will serve for a long time, delighting the owners and their guests.

Recommendations

Almost all barbecue projects are built from lightweight hollow bricks using a special cement-clay based masonry mortar. While using the barbecue, the inner surface of the chamber heats up to a maximum of 120°C. And the presence of voids only helps to retain heat.

For barbecues and barbecues combined with a hob, it is necessary to fill the cavities inside the brick with dry calcined sand, otherwise cracks will certainly appear due to poor thermal conductivity.

Ordinary quality hollow core bricks usually suffer from poor geometry, so if a requirement of 400 pcs. It is recommended to purchase at least 500 units; some will have to be discarded or used in the foundation of the gazebo.

If you buy

The above information is of a general nature; it will also be useful when choosing a purchased stove. But the main thing you need to know when deciding whether to build a stove in a gazebo or buy it is either you shell out at least $2,000, or you don’t get rid of the construction work, which will cost approx. 1000 of the same monetary units, in addition to the cost of the stove. Or you will have to sacrifice the taste of the food.

Ready-made stoves for gazebos are available in several types. Composite modular ones (item 1 in the figure below) are very light: the load on the supporting surface from them does not exceed housing construction 250 kgf/sq. m, so composite stoves can be placed simply on the floor. The modules are delivered assembled, they can be arranged like furniture: tilted, dragged. A composite stove breathes and in all operational parameters is equivalent to a good brick one, but $2000 for one is still cheap.

Ready-made stoves for industrial gazebos

Composite mini-oven, pos. 2, will cost 2-2.5 times cheaper, and one person brings it into the barn for the winter; at most two. This is mandatory, because mini-ovens belong to the economy class of these products; most of them are not certified for frost resistance. For the same economical reason, the mini-oven does not breathe and the quality of the baked goods from it is, at best, slightly above average.

Prefabricated stone stoves, pos. 3, made from steatite or its full-fledged substitutes. The product quality is ensured to be of the highest quality and is supplied in parts. The cost of the kit is only slightly lower than a ready-made modular oven. On-site installation from the supplier is formally free, but before that you need to order the construction of a foundation (the stove weighs more than half a ton), which costs $200-$900, depending on the type of existing building and local conditions. If the foundation is homemade, you will have to pick it up at your own expense and the warranty will be void.

A branded steel hearth stove for a gazebo (item 4) can be found for $250-300, and a used one that is quite suitable can be found at half the price. Weighs, depending on the model, 100-250 kg, can be placed on the floor. But the quality of the products is no higher than from a market barbecue.

Brick, masonry mortar, other materials

When building a barbecue, you will need two types of bricks: fireclay and regular. Fireclay is needed for laying the firebox and chimney.

Firebox made of fireclay bricks

The furnace body is made of ordinary brick. And this circumstance must be taken into account when calculating the amount of brick.

Ordinary ceramic bricks come in only one size - 250x120x65 mm (not counting one-and-a-half or double formats). And fireclay (or stove) bricks can be of different sizes.

The brand of fireclay brick ShB-8 (250x124x65 mm) is closest to a regular ceramic block, and this “extra” 4 mm of bed width is compensated for by the different thickness of the masonry joint. In other cases, the sizes differ quite significantly.

Advantages and disadvantages

It doesn’t take much time to build a gazebo with a stove. If you choose wood or iron sheets as the main material, you can significantly reduce the cost of the structure. Buildings made of natural stone and beams will fit into any landscape. Installing a stove has the following advantages:

  • The ability to transfer the cooking process from a stuffy kitchen to a spacious gazebo;
  • Constant air circulation;
  • The distance from the table to the grill or barbecue is reduced to a minimum;
  • In the evening, a fireplace or stove can be used for heating.

The disadvantages of construction include some difficulties during the construction of the chimney. It is technically impossible to make it tall without loss of space and additional costs.

Installation of water supply

For comfort, it would not hurt to supply water to the gazebo or construct a sewer system. After this, you get the green light to create a sink near the countertop. It is better to lay communications before organizing the foundation. Therefore, in the project, provide for the exact location of the sink. Use plastic pipes to route the water supply; this will simplify connecting the faucet and drain.

Do not forget that water will be needed in the gazebo in the warm season. It should be possible to turn off its supply and drainage in cold weather. Otherwise the pipeline will break.

Right choice

In order for construction to be successful and with a minimum number of errors, you need to carefully prepare. First of all, draw up a project for the future construction. It indicates the dimensions, main components of the stove, and the required material. You can take a ready-made drawing from the Internet and adapt it to your conditions.

What type of hearth to make depends on the following nuances:

  • ease of use;
  • material strength;
  • stove dimensions;
  • temperature range produced by the hearth;
  • street landscape and gazebo design.

With careful preparation, you can build exactly what you originally intended.

Finishing

Decorating the stove is at the discretion of the user. You can do without this, but sometimes it comes in handy. A simple and effective way: plaster the stove and cover it with tiles. There is an exception when finishing processing is not necessary. For example, a stove made of smooth bricks.

The rest is all up to your taste.

One oven is good, but the whole complex is even better. The hearth goes well with the smokehouse. Simple designs provide optimal conditions in the smoking compartment. Sometimes you can’t do without installing fireclay in the furnace. It is more difficult to build a complex structure, but it is easier to do if the construction is carried out simultaneously with a permanent gazebo. For high-quality smoking, the smoking cabinet must be high.
