Modern gazebo design: what to look for to choose the perfect project?

A gazebo is an essential element of any functional garden. In hot weather it protects from the sun, and during bad weather - from rain. It's great for everyday outdoor living, as well as for organizing casual barbecues or even an elegant garden party. Choose the perfect gazebo for your garden in a modern style.

Gazebos in Art Nouveau style: a selection of design photographs

We would like to introduce you to the variety of gazebos in the Art Nouveau style. Perhaps you will like some of the proposed photographs, and you will want to implement it in your summer cottage.

Modern is a direction in artistic architecture of the early 20th century. Translated from French and English, the style is called modern.

On our website there is a separate publication about modern gazebos and high-tech style buildings. These three terms should not be confused with each other.

Gazebo on the site

Such a hut is a vertical structure, which is raised 10-20 centimeters from the ground. Among the distinctive characteristics of this type of modern gazebo, professionals note the use of fresh flowers for decoration.

Advice! You can select plant varieties that are capable of independently forming a frame. The owner only needs to trim them periodically.

Examples of gazebos in the Art Nouveau style

Modern gazebos of this style clearly stand out from the rest. They have a natural shape and classic dark tones. Variegated colors are completely absent. Among the materials there are many transparent ones - glass, polycarbonate, polymers.

If you don’t delve too deeply into the intricacies of artistic architecture, then Modern buildings can include all modern buildings that do not have clearly defined lines of walls and roofs. You can see a lot of abstract shapes in the photo below.

In the architecture of this direction you can see many interesting patterns, decorative elements made of steel and carvings. All this creates an interesting, albeit rather classic, Art Nouveau style.

Bungalow

If a gazebo in a classic style requires the construction of a reliable foundation, requires serious time investment, and is suitable for harsh climatic conditions, then a bungalow can be chosen for a warm climate. This type of gazebo is suitable for temporary use.

Advice! Bungalows can be built only for the summer period and located on the beach.

If the climatic conditions of the region are characterized by sudden temperature changes and heavy snowfalls, then it is better to make the structure collapsible.

Differences between Modern and other movements

Like any other style, Modern has its own distinctive features:

  • The presence of predominantly natural and smooth lines. maximum avoidance of sharp and right angles.
  • Preference is given to modern building materials - metal, polycarbonate, concrete, polymers and glass.
  • There is functionality and comfort in the interior (lack of asceticism and minimalism).
  • The structure should be in harmony with nature, and not stand out from it.

Since country houses are built primarily for the comfort and relaxation of the owners, the requirements for compliance with all rules are noticeably reduced. Still, people relax in these gazebos, and do not admire the wonders of architecture.

Therefore, there is nothing wrong with the fact that some differences will not be taken into account in the project of this style.

Possible decorative elements

Lighting

Decorative lighting can be realized using LED lamps. It will be interesting, unconventional and quite modern. Despite the fact that preference is given to objects of the new era, it is quite possible to use steel shades and interesting lamps on the wall.

This style fully supports people’s right to comfort and self-expression, so don’t be shy about your needs, I’m trying to please this cultural trend. Personal comfort and happiness come first.

Green plants

Many gazebos are decorated with living plants. These can be climbing bushes along the frame of the gazebo, flower pots hanging on hooks, or any other green organic matter.

By filling the exterior and interior with flowers, you become familiar with Art Nouveau and its natural lines.

Cabinet and solid furniture

Perhaps only in our culture can massive Soviet furniture fit beautifully and organically into a space. Since this direction recognizes patterns on pieces of furniture, you can use some old elements that will fill the gazebo with coziness and comfort.

However, do not forget that Modern is translated as modern, so you should not indulge in antiques.

Varieties in designs

Structurally, the gazebo can be either a closed type (see Closed gazebos for summer cottages: permanent buildings) or open. The first ones are often built on summer cottages or country houses, in the courtyards of residential cottages, where permanent residence is provided. The second are in the dacha sectors, where they come for vacation in the summer or just for the weekend.

Advice! Regardless of what kind of structure the gazebo will be built in the garden, the main thing is to use at least three types of building materials from which it is built: a fence, a house or other household buildings for aesthetics and harmony in the landscape.

If the gazebo does not play a special role as a decorative element that attracts attention, it can be made in a regular rectangular shape (see Do-it-yourself rectangular gazebo: detailed construction instructions). They, as a rule, are visually lost in the overall picture, against the background of other structures, without attracting much attention to themselves.

Varieties in styles

The video presented in this article shows how important it is to comply with these requirements in improving the garden, site and landscape as a whole. Each of the well-known styles is endowed with its own characteristic features. This is what makes the building recognizable among others.

  • A gazebo in a rustic style - it can be easily distinguished from others by its massive size and functionality; barbecues or barbecues are often built along with them. In addition, natural building materials are used in construction.
  • A gazebo in the Art Nouveau style is characterized by clear lines and shapes, and contrast in combinations. The designs are sophisticated and at the same time functional.

Therefore, if you want to create a real stylish design, you need to familiarize yourself with the details:

Forms and other things, especially if you plan to create it yourself.

A little more about modernity

The main goal here is to make it as comfortable as possible. Exquisite elements of artistic forging with floral patterns are one of the main components of the Art Nouveau style.

Note. But, unfortunately, they are rare in Russian country houses. The modern-style gazebo has changed somewhat over the past 20 years.

Modernity today is:

  • A smooth transition from clear, straight lines to stylized flowers, leaves, animal silhouettes, and marine themes.
  • Color shades have become pure and more expressive, bright and at the same time moderate.
  • Particular attention is paid to the combination of texture contrasts.

The Art Nouveau style in the design of a gazebo is the creation of a functional and aesthetic design:

  • He skillfully turns the most typical thing into a real work of art.
  • And there is nothing surprising in the fact that the main structural elements are designed in an artistic direction with their own hands or using the labor of masters of this craft: columns, railings, steps and roofing.

Note. The main thing is to pay attention not only to the appearance of the building, but also to the harmony of its interior, where floral patterns dominate and glass with artistic carvings or forging is used.

Main characteristics of the pavilion

Pavilions are equipment that provides shelter from rain or strong gusts of wind. Garden architecture will also work well on summer days, providing shade from the sun's rays.

The ability to avoid bad weather conditions is not the only reason why outdoor gazebos are preferred by garden owners. You cannot forget their equally important function, which is to create an intimate space for meeting with family or friends. The described elements of mini-architecture will also work well in moments of solitude, for example, creating an excellent reading corner.

Material of manufacture

Instructions for choosing materials are provided as a separate topic on this site. To understand their characteristics and make the right choice for yourself, a table of properties is offered.

Solid woodMetalBrick
Less expensive material compared to metal or brick.Durable but very expensive materialUsed extremely rarely. Mainly used as an additional material for wooden structures. For example, in pillars, supports and other load-bearing elements.
They can have both a brutal appearance and openwork.Openwork forged structures.A gazebo made from pure brick will turn out to be very rough and unattractive.
Solid wood or laminated timber (slats) is used. The second option is more durable. Openwork weave can be used as independent elements or in combination with brickwork.Difficulties in constructing a hexagon or octagon. The mason will have to cut a huge number of bricks to build this structure.
They require additional care, impregnation and coloring.Requires painting and protection against corrosion.Does not require additional care - the material is endowed with excellent quality characteristics.
Color solutions: milky tones or natural textures of valuable wood speciesColor solutions depend on the imagination and preference of the owner, the main thing is without excess and harmony with the landscape of other buildings on the site. Can be used in natural color or in various colors.

Foundation installation

To obtain a high-quality structure, the operation of which will bring joy for decades, it is necessary to make a reliable foundation of one type or another. In the case of a small mass of the entire structure, a columnar or pile type of foundation is quite suitable. Let's talk about their production in more detail.

A columnar foundation consists of individual brick or block supports of rectangular cross-section, sufficiently buried in the ground. The bottom of the pit is pre-compacted and filled with crushed stone, onto which cement mortar is poured. After this, the simplest masonry is performed with tying adjacent rows of masonry material.

The pile foundation can be made using orange plastic sewer pipes. They are designed for use outside the building. They are buried in pre-drilled holes in the ground so that the upper edge is located 30-40 cm above the ground level. Next, the ends of the pipes are cut according to the level and the fittings are installed inside, three or four rods each. Then the cavity of the supports is filled with concrete mixture and left until it hardens.

The supports of the gazebo, made in one way or another, should be located in particularly critical places - at the junction of the floor trim beams. Their number depends on the chosen shape of the structure.

Arrangement of the structure

There are several distinctive attributes in the interior of gazebos that determine their design style:

Important! When starting to decorate the building inside, it is very important to adhere to the chosen style. The grill is installed at the back wall.

Furniture

In the chopped version of making a gazebo, massive furniture will look chic. There are more elegant varieties in panel construction. In a metal gazebo, you can generally get by with just light plastic sets.

Lighting

To do this, you can use floor and ceiling modern devices. For outdoor use, it is important to take into account one nuance - the light beam should not extend beyond the premises.

Decoration

In fact, without exception, all country gazebos are decorated with vegetation (see How to choose climbing plants for a gazebo), indoor or seasonal flowers. Placed in tubs or hung on flowerpots.

Decoration outside

Such structures are improved from the outside with the help of: decorative columns, railings, steps, terraces.

The price of construction depends on many components: size, type of construction, building materials, forging or handmade wood carving, solvency. However, a gazebo in the garden or in the yard is always a source of pride, a place where you want to receive guests and relax after a hard day.

Style Features

Many people mistakenly classify Art Nouveau as a modern movement. In fact, modernism arose at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.

In France, this style is also called art nouveau (translated as “new art”).

The direction has a number of distinctive features:

  • The main material is wood (many wooden elements of various shapes, it is possible to use forged parts);
  • Lack of strict straight lines, symmetry, smooth contours, elements imitating natural objects;
  • Decor – relief in the form of flowers, leaves, stems, as well as multi-colored stained glass windows;
  • Tall windows and doors, arched passages.

For those who are engaged in wood carving, building an Art Nouveau gazebo is the best way to apply their talent by decorating the building with ornate decorative elements.

You can choose more laconic designs with open space for your summer cottage, limiting yourself to an arched passage and minimal decor.

The decoration will be live climbing plants with flowers.

Art Nouveau style gazebo project

Interesting design projects in the Art Nouveau style can be found on websites dedicated to country architecture. Here are some examples:

  • Hexagonal wooden gazebo

The structure consists of a podium in the form of a hexagon, six support pillars, low curbs made of beams on three sides, a roof in the form of a hexagonal pyramid, jibs, and plywood trim in the form of arches on all sides. The building material is wood.

An unusual modern structure, consisting of four pillars (20x20 cm), four horizontal beams, jibs with a wavy outline on both sides, and a sheathed roof. The building material is wood.

The structure consists of four support pillars along the perimeter of the rectangle and five beams in the form of arcs; the soul is covered with a sheathing of slats. The building material is wood.

Modern interpretation: a structure consisting of five metal arches of different sizes and shapes, a wooden podium and wall decoration made of frequent wooden slats. Construction materials are wood and metal.

The building consists of an octagon-shaped podium with a step, 8 pillars, each pair of pillars is connected by an arch, the pairs united by an arch are connected to each other by an openwork wall to the middle of the pillar. The roof is two-level: the lower level has 4 arches, the upper level has a hipped dome. Decor in the form of forged elements with floral patterns.

How to age wood

It is the aged wood that best fits into the chalet style. This effect can be achieved in two ways:

  1. Thermal. The wood is carefully treated with fire retardants, then fired over an open fire until contrasting structural lines appear. The tree should not be on fire for too long; overexposure will damage it. Finally, the bars are varnished.
  2. Mechanical. Suitable only for conifers, in which the trunk is divided into soft and hard layers. The soft layer is scraped off with a metal brush until the relief of the hard structure appears. After this, the wood is varnished.

DIY Art Nouveau gazebo

You can build an interesting Art Nouveau designer gazebo for your own summer cottage with your own hands. To build the frame, you will need 6 ordinary beams with a square cross-section, and to finish five walls - a sheathing of slats. The roof is in the form of a hexagonal pyramid.

Next you need to add decorative elements with floral patterns. We find a suitable frame (corner) composition on the Internet for the query “modern ornament”, transfer it to a sheet of plywood, cut it out using a construction jigsaw, and attach it to the upper corner on each side.
