Shelf doors have come to us since the times of castles and knights - behind them there was usually a secret passage through which one could hide unnoticed. In modern interiors, of course, there is no need to solve the problem of conspiracy, but very often there is a need to optimize space. A doorway with shelves for books significantly increases the useful space, which is so lacking in small apartments. And in spacious houses, additional storage space is unlikely to hurt.

Mirror door
This is another type of secret door that is widely used in modern and classic interiors. They have a number of undeniable advantages over nondescript door frames - mirrors refresh the interior and create the magical illusion of deepening and expanding space in the room. They can even replace decor that is sometimes difficult to find a place in small rooms. Choose mirrored door leaves with a matte finish or complex patterns - they will look impressive in any interior.
Beautiful designer entrance doors
Of course, a beautiful and exclusive front door is a particularly attractive offer, as it effectively complements not only the interior of the hall, but also the front facade of the house. Let's see what such doors look like in completed projects from our design studio.
Wooden entrance door with chocolate-colored forged elements

To achieve complete unity in interior design, there is often a need to manufacture custom doors according to the author's sketches. In some cases, there really are no ready-made solutions in any catalog of leading brands. Prudnikova’s studio designs unique doors “with a twist,” which are then manufactured in the best Russian and Italian workshops. Such luxurious products cannot be purchased in the store, even by pre-order.
If you are interested in any models, contact our luxury interiors studio for an individual project! You will be surprised by the fact that the cost of designer doors is quite comparable to the cost of serial models of Italian brands. For the same money you will get a functional interior element created by a famous designer.
Luxurious stained glass front door with soft pink accents
All photos In the photo: Author's designer door to order/figcaption>
When talking about stained glass doors, we always remember medieval architecture, which has survived to this day even in a more luxurious format than was originally intended. By the way, archaeologists found the oldest stained glass windows in the world in Egypt; they are more than 6,000 years old. In modern design, stained glass doors are commonly used in English, Victorian, Classical (sometimes with a strong nod to Ancient Greece and Antiquity) and Mediterranean styles.
Doors with stained glass are a very good option for the front entrance to a house. Imagine, the sun's rays will penetrate through the colored glass and paint the floor and walls of the hall with multi-colored paints.
Exclusive designer door in Art Deco style with gold inserts
All photos In the photo: Beautiful modern designer door
In the Art Deco style, doors can be very different, but almost always - with geometric patterns and gold or silver inserts. Sometimes such a door is even decorated with mirrors, but usually they are partially glass on a wooden frame with a beautiful platband. Often the door is complemented with gold handles, and the door itself is light (white or beige), but you can also find equally luxurious black or chocolate options.
In the photo above you can see a decorative pseudo-transom above the door with decorative mirrors and gold inserts.

A camouflaged door is one of the popular design solutions when decorating doorways in small rooms. Moreover, large financial investments are not required to implement this technique. It is enough to cover standard door leaves with the same material as the walls - and they will completely dissolve in the space without cluttering it. If this option interests you, choose frameless models or use a regular swing door, but then do not frame the opening with platbands.

Pivot doors
Does your hallway have several doors from the living room, bathroom and kitchen at once, which turn it into a passage space, and not into a respectable place for meeting guests? Install pivot doors. This is a new modern design option for doorways, which is rarely seen in Russian apartment design projects. However, this is not the only originality of swing doors - due to the unusual method of opening, they save valuable space in small rooms and fit well into both modern and classic interior styles.

Refrigerator door
Would you like to create an environment reminiscent of London lofts in your kitchen? We offer a completely unexpected idea: imitate a refrigerator in the doorway.

As long as the door is closed, no one will even guess what is hidden behind it, and your interior will definitely not be boring!

Ping pong door
Could you imagine an interior door with a built-in tennis table? It turns out that this option is also possible. The concept of such a functional door was proposed by German designer Tobias Frenzel. Of course, such a door will not be suitable for professional sports training, but for a fifteen-minute warm-up in conditions of limited space, it will be indispensable. Imagine how happy your children will be when they have the opportunity to play ping pong without leaving home.

Required Tools
To make doors you need the following tools:
- circular saw for cutting material;
- milling cutter for cutting holes for locks, chamfering, shape cutting, etc.;
- thicknesser for stripping material;
- press for gluing overlays to the frame.
For home production you do not need to buy professional equipment. For example, a tree can be dissolved with a circular saw, and further processing can be done with a hand router.
Additional tools:
- drill;
- wood saw;
- angle grinder;
- screwdriver;
- hand tools - chisel, mallet, square, tape measure, level, etc.;
- spray gun for painting (you can also use brushes).
Full size door
This playful and spontaneous option will be appreciated by families with small children. In a “height” door, the leaf is divided into several parts, through each of which you can enter the room. The thoughtful design allows kids to independently enter the room without trying to reach the main door handle, and gives parents the opportunity to watch their children through the open top of the door leaf when they are playing in another room.

Corner doors
If you need to zone a space or expand a narrow doorway, pay attention to corner doors. These can be sliding structures or monolithic models, which in appearance have nothing in common with ordinary doors. The undeniable advantage of corner models is that even when open, they do not occupy a single centimeter of valuable space. And even when closed, such a door does not look like an inconspicuous box.

Festive decoration
You can come up with original decorating ideas for the holidays. The New Year takes the lead in terms of the abundance of innovative decisions. A flat surface not covered with wallpaper will withstand the pressure of tacks and the stickiness of adhesive tape, single or double-sided.
Options:
- Tinsel around the perimeter or in the center, in the shape of a Christmas tree;
- Christmas wreath made of artificial pine branches, balls, cones;
- A flat poster on a New Year theme, including appropriate congratulations;
- Stocking for gifts made of paper or fabric;
- Confetti scattered over areas specially coated with PVA glue;
- Snowflakes cut from corrugated paper with a unique pattern (they can be attached not only to windows, but also to doors);
- Finishing with tiny pieces of mirror, tile or plastic, imitation mosaic.
If the decoration turns out successful and spectacular, you can videotape the entire process. Do-it-yourself step-by-step door decor posted on Twitter or other social networks will attract many subscribers.
Glass door
Do you want to change the atmosphere of the room, add lively colors and accents to it, but are not ready to radically change the interior? Transform your doorway by replacing the regular door leaf with colored glass. Pay attention to the glass door models, decorated using the fusing technique - against the backdrop of a restrained interior, they look like a real art object.

Unusual doors, hospitable and not so
I welcome all visitors and lovers of interesting interiors on the pages of the Design Museum.
We constantly cross the boundaries of spaces, passing from one room to another, going outside and returning to the house. Most people think about what a door should look like during renovation, choosing one that suits their interior and taste. But the entrance to the house can be made into a street art design element.
There are many doors in the world that cannot be ignored. They are unique in their originality. Most of them invite you to stop by. Some are scary.
And there are such masterpieces that you just want to stand and think or even dream. Let's just look at some of the ones that photographers liked the most.
Suffice it to say Venice, and the picture depicts majestic palaces along the banks of the canals. But there is also a completely different area in this city. On the island of Burano there is a quarter of the same name, which is little known to tourists. But those who visited it were surprised by their brightly colored houses.
This facade of an old house in modern art style stands out even among its colorful neighbors. If the walls are simply painted with geometric shapes, then the paneled door is upholstered in leatherette with sofa nails. Then pieces of film were glued on top, which mostly came off. In one place there was a circle of kitchen oilcloth with a painted rose.
Photographer John S. Hudchins could not pass indifferently past the dilapidated but unique facade of the old house and the colorful door and captured this Italian miracle.
If you like looking at painted doors, then visit Italy. Not far from the Riviera is the town of Valloria. The roads in this area are winding and narrow. Sightseeing buses travel on them with great difficulty and are reluctant. When the village began to suffer an economic crisis, it was decided to take urgent and original measures. Then the residents of the town themselves, some invited artists, decorated the entrances of their houses with drawings.
Since then, Valloria regularly hosts a street art festival twice a year. Artists come to compete in the beauty and originality of the painting on the door, and spectators watch and evaluate. Thus, the unconventional thought of a local resident saved the village from ruin.
The owner himself decorated this door in a non-traditional way. Instead of ordinary oil painting, he created a three-dimensional picture, using wires, buttons, buttons, pieces of fabric, foil and even food wrappers to create the design.
The island of Sardinia is a federal region of Italy. The door to the house is completely ordinary. But what makes the facade of the house charming is the vine with decorative purple leaves. The classic version of a white wall and a dark door turns into a fairy-tale portal.
This is how purple wisteria decorates the façade. It is very beautiful and blooms for a long time, but not all year round. This is also Italy. But the old double door belongs to a house in Piedmont.
Spanish traditions are strong in Santa Fe. This can be seen from the image on the door and the style of painting on the walls around the entrance. The predominant colors in the interior are red-brown and blue. The theme of the painting is day and night. Figures of people and animals are drawn between the stars above the roofs. These are the dreams of sleeping residents of houses. Above the arch there is daylight and a clear blue sky. The walls on either side of the opening are decorated with spirals and sinuous lines, the color of the local clay and the walls of most buildings. Above the door leaf on the tympanum is an emblem with the sun and moon.
The Danes are very careful about nature. They severely punish builders who use non-natural materials. They take care of every tree and bush, especially within the city. But bright birdhouses on the facade of a house in a classic style are more of a decoration than an invitation for birds to live under one roof. It is possible that the designer proposed his own solution to the housing problem. Only he was several decades late. We are full of multi-storey buildings with miniature apartments. Interior design specialists have developed a number of techniques to increase space where the interior is small.
Thanks to this non-standard design, the black, strict entrance niche became cheerful and welcoming. Unfortunately, there is only one such door in Copenhagen.
In Paris, the Montmartre district has long been famous for being home to artists. Typically, poor representatives of the arts rented the cheapest living space, attics and mezzanines. Gradually, studios, salons and exhibition halls began to form, turning the quarter into a cultural center for fine arts.
Such a door could be located on the street of Montmartre. At first it was decorated with carved patterns by a cabinetmaker. Then the residents themselves repainted the old and worn one. Everyone found a place for themselves on the common canvas. If you look closely, you can read the names of salons and movements, see different styles of design and drawings. The portal to the world of art is international, as inscriptions in several languages are clearly visible, turning an ordinary facade into a dream home.
The capital of Morocco, Rabat is not only a multinational city, its residents worship different gods. The picture on the door shows that Muslims live in this house.
The Koran prohibits the depiction of everything that lives and grows on earth. Therefore, people who profess Islam are accustomed to decorating their homes with geometric designs intertwined with fantastic vegetation.
Painting in the interior of a house is of paramount importance. The walls and even the ceiling are covered with continuous patterns.
In order to save space, the swing door folds like an accordion, or rather like a fan, and when opening it requires almost no free space.
A simple geometric pattern runs along the perimeter, which is diversified by the alternation of blue and emerald cross-shaped elements.
This is a kind of baguette for a picture of flowers, branches and interlacing white lines. Since the owner of this house is not a rich man, there is no painting with gold, lilac and purple paints, which create the appearance of luxury. But there is still a desire to make your home beautiful and the facade non-standard.
Chefchaouen has two features for being famous. Let's start with the bad. It is surrounded by marijuana plantations, which grow in the suburbs and are highly valued. Dealers offer hashish to tourists right on the streets.
This village differs from other cities in Morocco in the cleanliness of its streets and the blue color of its walls and sidewalks. The rest of the country is so colorful that it even dazzles your eyes.
Everyone takes part in creating such a heavenly image. Women whitewash the bottom of walls and sidewalks with blue paint. And then the men come out with white lime. The top of the walls is traditionally white. Below they are brushed and turn the panels blue.
The Arabs have a tradition of decorating their houses with inlay, embossing and geometric patterns. Often color in the interior matters.
In living rooms, with the help of gilding and bright colors, they try to create the appearance of a higher material level than the owner of the house actually has.
Therefore, dilapidated doors with a peeling surface may have houses whose families have lost their breadwinner and live very poorly.
Moroccans don't like standard things. They convey their individuality through the façade of the house. You can walk throughout the city and will not find two identical entrances to the house.
The house is also located in Morocco, only in Fes. A slightly different direction in door design. As one of the main ones, there is a blue tone, but it is not enough.
Mostly this is the background color in places where the paint of the mural has peeled off. In front of the steps of small stones there is an image of an eight-pointed star.
Judging by the mosaic, the courtyard in the past had a rich decoration, now only the patterns on the area in front of the entrance and the door remain.
In Valparaiso, no one will be surprised by the brightly painted walls of the house and the painting on the door. In this rebellious Chilean town, even on the ends of the steps you can see drawings.
And any resident can read Pablo Nerudo’s poems to you. No wonder sailors call the port and the city the pearl of the ocean. On the slopes of the mountains, colorful houses are located close to each other.
In addition to sailors, there are many students in the city. Everyone tries to find their own original way to express their views and thoughts. Street art can be found at every step.
The door of a sunny yellow house looks at the world with slightly sad eyes and smiles only at the corners of its lips. But this simple design makes the home welcoming and welcoming. I would like to come in, say hello to the owner and wish him well.
Japanese designer Kazuyuki Ishihara decorates the houses and streets of big cities with green spaces. Only its landscape design is located in somewhat unusual places.
The largest number of his projects involve green roofs, loggias, and balconies. Here is an example of how Kazuyuki decorated the facade of a house, turning it into a park.
The basis of the decor is moss, which covers the surface of the walls and doors in miniature hills. Bushes of small leafy plants additionally decorate the surface.
The Japanese designer uses this technique in most of his projects. After all, mosses can grow on almost bare surfaces of stone and wood.
A special charm to the decorative entrance is given by a handle in the form of a knotted branch made of varnished wood and the same frames. Greenery emerges between the stones of the path. It’s as if you are standing not in the center of a huge city, but in the forest in front of Leshy’s hut.
The Chinese believe that the house should be guarded by the Dragon and the Tiger. The fire-breathing one is in front, and the striped one is on the back side. So if you open this door located in Shanghai, you can see the image of the second guard. Residents of the sky-high apartment strictly observe Feng Shui.
This is not a religion, but the rules of life in unity with nature and the forces of the cosmos. Rich people carefully choose the place to build their home.
Poor people, using techniques such as a red painted door, activate the good forces they need and drive out dark energy.
The Japanese dragon differs from the Serpent Gorynych in the number of heads, he only has one, and in his character, he is kind. That's why he is painted surrounded by flowers.
There are no dragons, but the door is still red and painted with bright colorful colors on the adjacent walls. So the gloomy gray house in Beijing was transformed and became cheerful and welcoming.
In Spain and the Balearic Islands, secure fences are placed around yards. The local stone stands strong, but the metal gate has been badly damaged by rain and sun.
It is impossible to determine the theme of the painting. But the artist tried and drew out small details. Therefore, you can distinguish between the blue background and the white and pink characters of the plot. The theme is continued by a blue lantern woven from stripes and a sign of the sun and moon on the arch.
In Portugal, the Little Prince from the fairy tale by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry lives on the door. Since Rose is not next to him, he is not on his planet.
This genre of modern art could only please a kind person. Therefore, you can knock on the door with the portrait of the little philosopher without fear.
And this facade of the house covered with mosses and plants can be seen in Lisbon. Nature itself created the design in the style of the Japanese artist Ishihara.
Welcome to visit the Little Mermaid, who lives in Madeira. She swings on a swing from a mailbox and has a bell in her hair. The author of this modern art very originally incorporated the door fittings into the picture.
The complete opposite of the previous kind and bright door is this metal barrier at the entrance to a house in New York. The rusty structure is welded from plates and plates of different sizes.
This miracle of art guards the house better than a dog. Even if you need to, you won’t want to touch the intercom, much less come in.
But in front of such a gate to the garden, also made of metal, you will involuntarily stop to admire the decoration with flowers. Climbing roses created an arch over the entrance to the garden.
There are so many flowers that the green foliage is almost invisible. Some of the petals have already fallen off and stained the path crimson.
India belongs to the East and the tradition of decorating with bronze and gold paints is strong. The difference is in the themes of the drawings. Since the main religions of the country, Hinduism and Buddhism, do not prohibit drawing people and nature, the design of houses and temples is very different.
Wall painting in the interior is present everywhere, but it usually depicts birds, plants and animals, although there are many geometric patterns. Instead of intarsia, there is bronze embossing throughout.
This façade is completely covered with drawings of plants. In the recess of the semi-arch, peacocks spread their magnificent tails. The surface of the walls is completely covered with zigzags of white and brown tones. On top of them are images of birds and musicians, flowers, vines and inscriptions.
The main task of such an entrance is to create the appearance of wealth in the house. This is served by the door decorated in bronze and the rich painting around it.
The wedge leaf is featured on the coat of arms of Canada. It is not surprising that the owner of this house wanted to decorate his facade with the contours of this particular tree.
On a yellow background, a gray trunk and branches and the last red leaves are leaving them. Late autumn is depicted, but not the soul is warm and sunny. They know how to create a mood in Toronto.
Interior painting in Indonesia also has the clear depiction of small details inherent in oriental designs. Only the patterns are more floral and floral; they have few geometric bases. The artist tried for a long time to create the image of this unique door.
Each petal and leaf has a shade, and the scales on the backs of the dragons are visible. Although the walls are old, in some places the rains have washed away the ocher from them, the painting on the door panel shines with fresh colors.
Apparently the owner loves his entrance to the house and constantly paints on it. Although in Indonesia women can do this too.
A Florida resident painted a million colorful roses on the wall of his house. Such street art can not only decorate the street, but even attract tourists. No special artistic talents are needed. The flowers are drawn schematically, simply, from the heart and this is the main thing.
A blue door, so similar to many Moroccan entrances to houses. But this is prim and old-fashioned Britain. The facade of the house is quite picturesque, although it is made in tones of the same color. The simple wooden painted door is flanked by Roman columns supporting an arch.
The tympanum has diverging rays, like an image of the sun with sagging webs. A house in Europe with a cocktail of Arabic, Roman and Greek style elements against a background of dilapidated walls.
This old portal to another world with peeling paint stands in the German Alps. It's hard to imagine that there was a house here. Most likely, this door symbolizes the transition from rocky and steep slopes to a green valley.
Picture door
Another option to transform an ordinary door into a piece of art is to depict a picture on the door leaf. These could be beautiful landscapes or places on the globe where you would like to visit. Just imagine a corridor with several doors, each of which looks like a window into the world of distant countries. For travel lovers, we think this is an indispensable option. At the same time, you don’t have to spend a lot on such door decoration - you can draw a picture yourself, and if you don’t have artistic talent, use photo wallpaper or vinyl film.

Original discoveries of designers brought to reality
A master class on decorating a door with your own hands will help you make a door in the form of:
- Telephone booth doors;
- Piano keyboards;
- Imitation of a famous poster;
- Brick wall of an old house;
- Waterfall;
- Artificially aged marble;
- tiled stove;
- Ghosts;
- Webs with a spider in the middle;
- A road leading to nowhere;
- Woodpiles of firewood;
- Fireplace or aquarium;
- And so on.
If you show enough imagination and initiative, you should stock up on the right amount of suitable materials and stick them on the surface in the form of a collage. This can be done, for example, with old belts or fragments of mirrors.
Another unique method, suitable for exceptional individuals, is the so-called. "creative mess" In this case, no preliminary preparations are required: no degreasing, no priming, no puttying.
All the “garbage” and small things found in the house are used. Papier-mâché made from egg trays or a mesh woven from old twine are suitable for attaching to the surface.
It is enough to cover the resulting work with a layer of aerosol enamel, and it will acquire a solid and finished look.
Broken door
In high-tech or loft interiors, shattered doors designed by Argentine designer Leonardo Ehrlich look impressive. Looking at such a door, you will think that the stained glass has broken, but this is just an illusion. If you are not afraid of bold experiments, take note of this design idea. Moreover, it is not at all difficult to implement - the fragments for the door leaf can be made from plywood and covered with a glossy film, or you can use a ready-made sticker with an impressive design.

Decorative potential of materials
Simple plywood doors painted with white enamel, standard for council housing, look far from attractive. PVC or veneer doors are also not the best option for comfort in the house. Finishing methods:
- Door decor using stencils - applying figured ornaments to the corners and/or center, using bright colors and contour samples;
- Painting with different colors in a certain order, including stripes, chess, diamonds, etc.;
- Finishing with frames, shields, panels placed at different heights and on both sides.
- Glass stripes can be interspersed with wood or have fancy shapes.
Interior doors with glass inserts are suitable for creating stained glass compositions, both abstract ones, from curlicues, rings, circles, and plot ones, on holiday themes.
You can take already known masterpieces as a basis, for example, the Gothic “rose”, or come up with something new. Not only the insertion of new, colored glass is suitable, but also painting with special paints on existing ones.
Spraying in the form of sparks, dots, stars is suitable for an iron door. With the help of a 7-color rainbow stretching across the canvas, you can easily hide flaws - cracks, scratches, bruises. A question mark or any other symbol made of metal studs in itself will make you think and live in a new way.
The façade itself, framing the door, also needs finishing. The ideal element is a molding that imitates stucco, made of polystyrene foam or polyurethane. The choice on the market is so diverse that you can choose one for any interior style and type of room.
Door reminder
Another interesting design find is the reminder door. You can take notes on it, leave a shopping list for dinner, or a note for a loved one. Designing such a door yourself will not be difficult - you can hang a chalk board on the door leaf or cover it with water-soluble latex-based paint, on which you can write with chalk.

Door hanger
At first glance, there is nothing unusual about this door - a simple partition that opens like an accordion. However, it can play the functional role of a closet, since there are hooks on the back of the door on which you can hang things. Such a door would be an excellent option for small hallways that do not have space for a hanger. If you place it, for example, in the bedroom, the problem of storing home clothes will be instantly solved.

Decorating with a practical intent
If the door is finished with wooden slats and covered with stain or varnish, it does not need any other decoration.
The photo of the door decor shows how elegantly carefully decorated examples look and that any additional accessories are inappropriate and should be selected with great taste and intelligence.
- Fittings - handles and hinges, especially forged, curved, twisted - will be the best decor, useful and suitable for any setting. Locks, peepholes, unusual-looking strips, and forged elements will find their rightful place on the door.
- The outer door can be equipped with dermantin upholstery. By laying “paths” of metal strips in a geometric pattern, you can really make the coating durable and stylish. A more expensive option is to use artificial leather.
Colored door
If you need to quickly add an accent to the interior, paint the interior door in a bright color - and an unusual decoration for the room is ready. Use one tone or make the door multi-colored - it’s up to you to decide. To avoid overloading the interior with color, duplicate it pointwise in decor and accessories. Then the colored door will definitely not look like a tacky spot at the entrance to the room.

What is required to make exclusive doors
You should not count on the fact that the team of any carpentry shop will be able to produce an original door that meets your wishes. Unfortunately, this is a utopia - creating exclusive doors requires special equipment, the availability of which is unlikely for small industries. Ordering a unique door from dubious craftsmen without equipment is the height of imprudence.
Keep one thing in mind - an original and high-quality non-standard wooden door will in any case cost at least 30-50% more than standard models.
Reputable manufacturers have a number of their own projects and developments, which customers are encouraged to focus on. Professional craftsmen have been specializing in working with individual orders for years, and therefore will be able to complete an order of any complexity, even if unforeseen circumstances arise. A company that values its reputation will perform the work at the highest level and provide a long-term guarantee for a non-standard door of any shape, size or configuration.
