How to bend a pipe at home with and without a pipe bender

Many garden jobs require specific skills. For example, we need to make an arch for grapes, which would have a sloping, spherical shape. Naturally, for this, the working material must be brought into the appropriate form. We take a regular or profile pipe with the hope that it will easily succumb to our efforts. But everything goes a little differently than we expected, and even if there is a bend, it is crooked, uneven, and moves several centimeters away from the given place. Very rarely, in approximately only 10% of cases, it is possible to successfully bend a product with your own hands without special tools. But this result is not very suitable for us for obvious reasons. Therefore, the site DachaDecor.ru decided to present modern and classic methods that will help bend a metal tube quickly and strictly in the right place.

Where in the countryside can a bent pipe come in handy?

You should not think that this material does not concern you in any way, since you are not going to build something round or similar in shape.

A bent pipe is necessary in many cases:

  • For the construction of arches, gazebos and canopies;
  • When constructing fences, fences and more serious barriers;
  • In landscape design, for the arrangement and construction of small architectural forms;
  • In the case of working with engineering systems on the site, with the same sewerage or water supply;
  • For the production of country furniture, light and small frames, etc.

One of the times when you need to bend a metal tube is if you want to leave the material intact. For example, when working with the assembly of frames... here you can always cut the source into two parts and connect them at the desired angle by welding or bolts and nuts.

But you can leave the material intact, and then you will definitely need to bend it.

So, there are several ways that will help you bend a pipe efficiently and according to a clear mark.

Briefly about the main thing

To install support posts for a fence, 3 methods are used: concreting, backfilling, driving.

Hammering fence posts is an effective method of constructing supports, economical, but labor-intensive.

The advantages include quick installation and use in many types of soil. Disadvantages: fragility (up to 10 years) and labor intensity.

For light decorative or temporary fences up to 1.5 m high, driving is done using a sledgehammer; to speed up the process, use a hammer drill (using a special attachment).

For high posts (up to 3 meters high), it is advisable to drive the posts using a headstock; if you need to mount the fence quickly and do not take into account the financial issue, you can drive the posts using a piledriver.

How to bend a metal pipe

To produce such deformation, simple machines - pipe benders - are often used in the country:

  • Manual pipe benders. Such machines are used for bending small diameters and most often for non-ferrous metals. The process itself is quite simple - you need to install the tube in the machine, fix it, and then, using a special lever, make a bend. You can change the diameter by moving the product through the machine and making additional folds in succession, if, of course, your machine allows it;
  • Hydraulic pipe benders work on much the same principle, but you don't need to use a lot of physical force. The main action is carried out by hydraulic cylinders;
  • Electromechanical pipe benders are even more serious and, naturally, expensive equipment. They are distinguished by multitasking and precision in work.

It is also necessary to consider the types of pipe benders depending on the bending requirements and pipe materials:

  • Mandrel pipe bender - for products with a thin wall and small diameter;
  • Spring - for manual bending using a spring (for small cross-section tubes);
  • Crossbow - a machine with a ready-made bending shape;
  • A segment pipe bender is a machine that works by drawing a pipe around a special segment.

You can bend a metal product on a plane-parallel plate. So, by placing the workpiece in the clamps, a force is applied, thanks to which the pipe takes the shape of a plate. It's quite simple, and the fold turns out to be of high quality. But when working with a plate, you will receive products of strictly the same shape, with an identical bend. This is the whole low practicality of the method, since to obtain other forms you will need to have several plates at your dacha.

There is a method that uses a metal spring. But it works with non-ferrous metals, which are soft.

The object of work is installed inside the spring, clamped with one edge in a vice and bent to the desired diameter. This way, compression and tension forces are transferred from the walls of the pipe to the spring, and the chance that the colored thin-walled material will burst is seriously reduced.

Modular smoke removal systems made of stainless steel - a modern option at an affordable cost

Today, the most optimal, affordable, safe and common type of chimneys are modular stainless steel pipes. Due to their technical characteristics and features, they allow you to create smoke routes of any configuration, length, inside or outside the building, and they also effectively and safely remove combustion products. Modular chimneys are easy and fairly quick to install; if assembled correctly, they can last for decades, and at the same time, they are affordable.

There are a number of rules and requirements that must be followed when installing a chimney in order to guarantee fire and operational safety of both the smoke exhaust route itself and the heating equipment. There are also certain rules for installing and installing a chimney on the roof. Let's look at them in detail in this article.

How to bend a pipe using sand

There is also an old-fashioned method that uses sand. The good thing about it is that you don’t need a special machine or other expensive equipment to bend metal.

Sand is poured inside the pipe so that it completely occupies the entire internal space. Next, the edges of the product must be plugged so that the sand does not spill out. The next step is to heat the metal at the site of the future bend, which can be done with a torch. The last stage is fixation and force, due to which the required shape will be obtained. After work, the sand is poured out of the tube.

It is very important not to bend galvanized and painted products using heat, because at the bend site the protective or decorative layer may be damaged.

What you need to know when choosing

Watch the video

If you decide to purchase scissors, then consider the following important points:

  • blade feature. It is desirable that it be made of stainless steel, and the sharpening angle is 30 degrees;
  • handle with rubber inserts for comfortable use. Before purchasing, you should compare with other types and make sure that the handle fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and is the perfect size;
  • a wide and strong base so that the knee is securely fastened, otherwise the result will be an uneven cut;
  • weight - everything is simple here, the lower the weight, the easier it is to carry out the work;
  • It is desirable that the return of the cutting rail and support be automatic by a spring. Otherwise, you will need to manually return these elements to the open state.

Also, before making a purchase, it is recommended to determine the diameter and length of the pipeline, then make your choice based on this.

Is it possible to bend a profile pipe

It is clear that due to its shape, a square or profile pipe has increased rigidity. Therefore, you should apply serious skills here, but do not forget that there is expert advice for such matters.

So, sand is poured into the pipe. It is advisable to be thicker if you want to preserve the normal shape of the product on the fold as much as possible. It's easy to do! First, one edge is closed with a wooden peg, then sand is poured inside, and the second edge is also closed. The tube is placed in a vice and straightened with a mallet until it obtains the desired shape.

You can heat the metal at the bend, and even use a pipe bender designed for a profile pipe, but any assessment of the possibilities and subsequent actions takes place directly on the spot.

What is important to know about making a homemade bow from a plastic pipe?

Not everyone can make a bow from a PVC pipe with their own hands. It’s even more difficult to make it according to all the rules, from good 7-year-old wood, so plastic will help you! If you have something to heat up a PVC pipe marked SCH40 or a similar format, with a sufficient wall thickness of 3 mm. Everything else is straightforward, although it is difficult to replace the bowstring with decent modern material.

Why a plastic pipe? It has enough strength and flexibility to make tension for the shot. If your hands are trained and the bow is made with high quality, then hitting the target is almost like a crossbow or a real sports bow. Using the same principle, children’s bows are made with their own hands, but a half-inch pipe is used for this. They are sold in three-meter lengths, which is enough for 2 bows. It is easy to heat a PVC water pipe with a construction hairdryer to 160-180°C to form the product of the required shape. Main parameters of a plastic pipe:

  • diameter ¾ inch;
  • outer diameter 26.7mm;
  • the length of a single pipe is 3.048 m, for a bow 1.5 m is enough;
  • maximum pressure up to 33 atmospheres;
  • outer diameter 26.7mm.

You can cut the pipe to the required length with an ordinary hacksaw

Structural details of a homemade plastic bow:

  • base or handle;
  • arrow window in the center;
  • shoulders (preferably reinforced with an internal insert);
  • notches for the bowstring and the bowstring itself (synthetic analogue).

Advice! Stock up on work gloves and thick, non-flammable fabric to make it easier to shape a hot product with your own hands.

Do not forget that you need real or homemade arrows, which used to be worn on a belt or on a belt over the shoulder in a special device - a quiver.

We use a grinder and welding

To be honest, this is a very controversial method: using it wastes a lot of effort since you are doing double work. Moreover, if it is necessary to bend a lot of pipes, then money is spent, because electricity today is very expensive, and a lot of it is needed to operate an angle grinder and a welding machine.

The method is that several cuts are made at the bend of the pipe, due to which it loses its strength. Next, even by hand, the product is bent, and the cuts are sealed by welding. Of course, the method is applicable depending on the need for the radius and the initial parameters of the work object, but if possible, it is better to use other, simpler and faster methods.

Specialized equipment

Not only universal equipment, but also highly specialized equipment is suitable for cutting pipe edges for welding. You can choose based solely on the volume of work.

If we talk about universal machines, we can highlight angle grinders, bench tools and files.

Promotech presents a huge selection of narrowly targeted chamfering machines: edge cutters and chamferers of the BM and PRO series, which are perfect for performing a large volume of similar seams.

How to bend a metal-plastic pipe

When working with heating, plumbing, or even during the construction of a greenhouse in the country, we also have to use metal-plastic pipes. They can be bent with the least effort and even very simply, but just as easily they can be rendered unusable. After all, externally the product takes on the shape we need, but we do not see what is happening to it from the inside. The material may suffer quite a lot, which will certainly affect its performance. It’s okay if a frame is assembled from it for a spring greenhouse, but if the pipe is needed for the heating system of a country house or for water supply, then there may be troubles.

Metal-plastic should be bent very carefully, using gradual movements. Without sharp breaks, you can bend the pipe up to 90 degrees, absolutely without damage. But this must be done not in one place, obtaining a pointed corner, but over at least several centimeters, moving the bend along the pipe. Thus, you can even bend the tube to its opposite direction, that is, up to 180 degrees. This is often necessary when installing a warm water floor in a country house. It is only necessary to comply with the mandatory requirement - to make not one sharp bend, but two 90-degree bends, at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other. Then there will be no problems.

When bending a metal-plastic pipe, you can also use sand, which helped us earlier with metal pipes. The whole process is identical - pouring sand, sealing the edges and folding, but there are fewer sudden movements and more accuracy.

  • Concluding a work acceptance certificate and providing guarantees for work performed

Reliable warranty obligations for the installation of smoke exhaust equipment are the key to peace of mind and safety of both the life and property of the user of the heating system. Saving on professional installation and attempting to carry out such complex work yourself can lead to dire consequences - at a maximum, and to unnecessary spending of a lot of money - at a minimum.

Bend polypropylene

At the dacha, a telephone pipe will also come in handy. It is suitable for plumbing work not only in city apartments, but also in any residential building. Bringing water to a new kitchen in a country house, to an outdoor shower, to a car wash - all this can be done with polypropylene.

It often has to be bent, although experienced plumbers use corner couplings for this.

They are available for sale in a large assortment, at almost any required degree, so we advise you to give the structure the desired shape by soldering and corners. But if you want to bend a pipe without extra costs, use the following method.

This method is very simple - heating with a hairdryer. You need to work without sudden movements and only with gradual heating and bending. Strong bends, which could simply change the internal cross-section, should not be allowed. This will affect the pressure in the pipe, which is not what we want.

The heated tube is bent and fixed in the required position until it cools, and then used for its intended purpose. You can also use sand here, but it is much better to take the special components for the job that we talked about earlier.

You can bend a pipe with or without a special tool, but it all depends on the requirements for the type of finished product and its quality. Therefore, we recommend doing everything according to the rules, as well as using proven modern methods, because even in the countryside you need products that are reliable, practical and aesthetically attractive.
