Do-it-yourself tractor from a walk-behind tractor: how to make a mini-tractor and a mini-excavator from MTZ, Neva and Cascade

Low-octane brands of gasoline - AI-76 and AI-80 disappeared from responsible gas stations almost ten years ago, but the question of what to do with equipment originally designed for them does not lose its relevance to this day. Thousands of users have become convinced that thoughtlessly pouring 92 or 95 into carburetor equipment is a very risky business, which can lead to undesirable consequences.

This does not bypass walk-behind tractors, for the power part of which the “meeting” with the latest fuel modifications becomes a real test of endurance. We will consider further why this happens and how to transfer cultivators from AI-76 to AI-92 fuel.

Application area

This machine will be extremely useful in agriculture, because it can be used to do a wide range of work, for example, clearing snow using a mini tractor. Therefore, even old walk-behind tractors can be very successfully used to create mini tractors that will be more than useful to you.

You can do this from a new walk-behind tractor if you think you need a compact tractor more.

In agriculture, technology plays a very important role. She is both a method of transportation, and an excellent assistant, and a tractor, and a strongman. Therefore, there is nothing better than a private house with a farm, which has a full fleet of all necessary equipment. Tractors (for example, MTZ tractors) are especially widely used.

Mini tractor

They do not have to be large and powerful, because even a small and compact tractor can provide significant assistance and become a good transport and way of transporting goods. In a word, there can be as many applications for such equipment as are convenient, because when working on the ground, you can come up with almost any “tasks.”

But small tractors are most often used precisely as transport, as well as mobile platforms on which various agricultural equipment can be installed.

If you equip a minitractor with a bucket, you will get an analogue of an excavator (see, for example, a Hyundai excavator), with which you can dig and loosen the ground, which is simply necessary in agriculture.

In addition, with a mini-tractor you can even graze livestock comfortably, because instead of walking, you will be riding on your steel horse.

Is it possible to make a mini tractor yourself? If you have no idea how to make a mini tractor from a walk-behind tractor with your own hands, then we are ready to please you: everything is easier than it seems. To get inspired, you can watch the video on how to make a mini tractor from a walk-behind tractor with your own hands. We also suggest watching a video about homemade minitrators – here.

Breaking and remaking equipment is not the most difficult process. Plus, you don't have to do absolutely everything yourself. There are special kits that will allow you to easily transform one type of equipment into another in a short period of time. This set includes the following parts:

Frame

  • Frame with special mounting space for engine
  • Pedals
  • Seats
  • Levers for disabling the axle shaft locking
  • Steering wheel
  • Wings
  • Front beam and rear linkage

This kit is ideal for those who are wondering how to quickly convert a walk-behind tractor into a mini tractor. But there are many people who approach this idea with genuine enthusiasm, and therefore want to carry out all the work themselves, without using ready-made sets of parts.

It is for them that we will tell you how to make a mini tractor yourself from a walk-behind tractor.

Conversion kit

The differences mentioned above make it somewhat difficult to convert walk-behind tractors into mini tractors. A special conversion module comes to the rescue. Using it, you don’t have to look for individual parts or think about how to make individual elements of the tractor.

Using the KIT set, you can get the following three advantages:

  • refuse to press the hinged parts;
  • avoid strong vibrations;
  • simplify work in the field to the limit.

A special feature of “KIT” is that the steering wheel is connected through a worm-type gearbox. Steering rods with standard ends are also used for control.

The kit includes a drum-type brake system driven by hydraulic fluid. The accelerator is controlled manually, and the brake/clutch complex is coordinated by the pedals. The developers of the conversion module have provided for the orientation of the gearbox towards the driver; it is placed on the frame.

Mounted and trailed devices are attached using a separate device. The “KIT No. 1” set includes a mount that allows you to install a lawn mower and a shovel (snow blade). It also includes front Zhiguli wheels.

You also need to mention such details as:

  • frame;
  • seat base;
  • the seat itself;
  • driver protection;
  • back;
  • mini tractor wings;
  • levers that lock and unlock one of the axle shafts;
  • brake cylinder;
  • hydraulic reservoir;
  • drum and platter.

The rear axle and auxiliary attachments, as well as the wheels located at the front, are not included in the “KIT”. As for the tools, they are selected individually.

But in any case, you need the following:

  • hammers;
  • electric drills;
  • keys;
  • welding machine and electrodes for it;
  • angle grinder;
  • fasteners;
  • clamps;
  • square;
  • drills for steel processing;
  • metal circles.

The choice of wheels is at your own discretion. You can use both car wheels and wheels mounted on a walk-behind tractor of a similar format.

The cost of ready-made kits for converting walk-behind tractors into mini-tractors varies on average from 60 to 65 thousand rubles. Of course, additionally purchased devices can significantly increase this amount. By varying the set of auxiliary components, it is possible to change the total cost.

Instructions

You can easily create a mini tractor from walk-behind tractors from a variety of manufacturers (for example, from a Foreman walk-behind tractor). So, if you have Agro equipment, then you should build the tractor according to the following instructions. To make it you will need:

  • Motoblock Agro
  • Steel sheets and profiles
  • Car seat
  • Steering wheel from a car of any model
  • One or two pairs of wheels can be changed, all of them, or you can leave one “original” one.

Wheels

In general, this “formula” is suitable for walk-behind tractors from any manufacturer, because the parts for manufacturing are not much different.

All-wheel drive 4x4 walk-behind tractor: a mini tractor from Niva with a do-it-yourself engine

The specifics of life in rural areas presuppose the presence of certain means of small-scale mechanization that help the summer resident in his daily work. This especially applies to farmers who have fairly large holdings, the processing of which by hand is simply impossible.

In such cases, homemade mini tractors made by rural craftsmen are becoming increasingly relevant and worthy of attention. This is quite justified, because this approach to business allows you to significantly save on the purchase of the unit itself, which is the main reason for such homemade products.

This can also be interesting because the assembly process itself can be quite exciting, especially for those people who are partial to technology.

Design Features

By making a mini tractor with your own hands, you can feel like a real designer. Before you make a mini tractor from a walk-behind tractor yourself, you need to decide on the purpose of this equipment, because the design of the machine is developed depending on it.

For example, if you need a tractor for agricultural work, and not, say, for transportation, then the best choice of body design is a solid frame. But if you need a car not only for work, but also for moving around hard-to-reach places, then it is better to choose a broken frame.

It will provide much higher maneuverability and will make it possible to pass even really difficult sections of the road. Another type of design of such equipment is the so-called “adapter”. This type of mini tractor is equipped with a removable trailer. With a little effort, you can make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.

Engine

In addition, if you want to use the tractor for agricultural work, it is better to place the engines at the rear of the structure. Of course, the front location provides better maneuverability, however, it also puts too much pressure on the front wheels, and the transmission for such equipment will be a real problem.

How to do it

Perhaps the most interesting option for self-assembly is a homemade 4x4 fracture mini tractor,

which is made on the basis of a walk-behind tractor. In general, this is a fairly common method of assembling a mini tractor, which proves its efficiency and performance during operation.

The video shows a homemade mini tractor with a walk-behind tractor engine.

Externally, this design looks rather cumbersome, but the interior is completely proportional, i.e. Every detail is in its place, precisely adjusted to the dimensions and parameters. Let's look at the design features in more detail:

Photos of drawings of units

  • The frame structure will consist of two components - spars and traverses. Spars are made of three components. The front part will be made of channel 0, the last part will be made of a steel pipe with parameters 8x8 cm.
  • The rear traverse will be made from channel 6, and the front one from channel 6. The cross members are made in the same way. In principle, all homemade all-wheel drive mini tractors have a similar frame design, with the same technical parameters.
  • Almost any power unit can be used as an engine, the power of which will be sufficient to carry out agricultural work. The ideal option, in this case, would be to use a 4-stroke water-cooled diesel engine.
  • The gearbox and power take-off shaft transfer case can be taken from a GAZ-53 car. The clutch will fit from a GAZ-52.
  • When connecting the clutch and engine, certain problems may arise. We will have to re-make the engine flywheel, and also make a new clutch basket cover to fit it to the engine. The flywheel is ground on a lathe, cutting off the rear area, and also turning an additional span in the middle.
  • In general, homemade mini tractors involve adjustments to certain parts, so you should be prepared for the fact that you will have to turn to a turner to grind some components.
  • The bridge is installed into the structure with virtually no changes. It is attached to the frame using four stepladders.
  • As wheels you can use similar ones taken from passenger cars.
  • An important stage of work will be the location of the driver's seat. It must be positioned in such a way that the steering wheel does not rest on the driver’s knees, i.e. did not interfere with the free control of the device.

Homemade mini tractors have a very important advantage - they have very good maneuverability. Of course, this assembly method is a little more complicated than the alternatives, but it is definitely worth the effort.

Potato planters mechanize and improve the planting process, making the rows even, planting the tubers at the same distance from each other and at the same depth. Here you will find all the necessary information about potato planters.

In general, in this assembly method, a lot of components are taken from old domestic cars. For example, the steering rack can be borrowed from an old Zhiguli, the same can be said about the drum brake - it can also be taken from a used car.

The procedure for assembling a homemade tractor

The production of a mini tractor itself occurs as follows: according to the drawing, you weld steel profiles and sheets, forming the frame of the future tractor. This, in fact, is the body of the machine. Next, the equipment is installed with its “internal organs” – the engine, transmission, and chassis.

When installing and fastening these parts, it is extremely important to carry out all work correctly and in full accordance with the drawings. Once you have installed these important parts of the mini tractor, you should add the “cherry on the cake”: install the seat, steering wheel, as well as stops and turn signals if you are going to drive on the roads.

Usually the last point is unnecessary, but you may want to make your technique really perfect.

Agro

However, it is worth considering some features of walk-behind tractors that will manifest themselves when using a mini tractor made from it. Thus, Agro walk-behind tractors have such a disadvantage as weak super-arcs.

For more details about the Agro walk-behind tractor, watch the video:

Of course, this is completely unnoticeable for the walk-behind tractor itself, but for the design of a mini tractor this can be critical, especially if you want to transport heavy equipment on your equipment.

How to make mini tractors from walk-behind tractors of various models?

From the Zubr walk-behind tractor

If you need a mini tractor with high power, then it is best to use a Zubr walk-behind tractor as a base. The drawings that will help you create a small tractor yourself imply the use of the same parts as the previous version.

The manufacturing procedure for this type of equipment is identical to that of an Agro-based mini tractor.

Fracture from a Cascade walk-behind tractor

If you want to use a new walk-behind tractor, but buy it for little money, then Cascade is one of the best options.

It will also be very profitable to purchase MTZ 05.

Cultivator from the Centaur walk-behind tractor

For those who value maneuverability, power and the ability to perform a wide range of work, we can also recommend the Centaur walk-behind tractor. However, it is worth considering that it is quite expensive. But this base for a mini tractor can be safely called one of the best, because it will work like a clock.

Oka walk-behind tractors are often used as the initial raw material for making mini tractors with your own hands.

The Salyut S walk-behind tractor is also suitable for making a mini tractor.

Here, domestically produced walk-behind tractors are specially selected, since they are cheaper than their foreign counterparts. You hardly want to spend extra money on a product that will continue to be redesigned and improved. Therefore, the models listed above are ideal as a base.

Is it possible to fill 92 gasoline instead of 80 into a walk-behind tractor?

In order to answer this question correctly, you need to understand what is behind the labeling of these types of fuel. Well-known brands of gasoline - AI-76, AI-80, AI-92, which are classified by octane number, are characterized by nothing more than the ability of the fuel to detonate during compression, which is expressed in the amount of anti-knock additives. However, their calorie content is almost the same.

In practice, at low compression forces the 92 will detonate faster than its low octane counterparts. What does this mean? It all depends on the type of engine that is installed on the walk-behind tractor.

In particular:

  • for 2-stroke engines - a decrease in power indicators, increased heat transfer, which can lead to overheating and failure;
  • for 4-stroke engines - in addition to the above, there is also the likelihood of exhaust valve combustion and frequent stalls both at idle and under load.

In both cases, another phenomenon cannot be excluded - the so-called. "glow ignition" Glow ignition is a process in which the ignition of gasoline with air occurs not from a spark formed, but from overheated internal components or carbon deposits. Since 92 gasoline requires a higher calorific value and contains more cycloalkenes - carbon derivatives, when it gets into the engine, it contributes to overheating of mechanisms that can ignite the combustible mixture even without spark supply.

Despite the carelessness of the majority of consumers who confidently fill their cultivators with 92 or even 95 gasoline, this is highly not recommended. But this is not a sentence. For walk-behind tractors produced 15-20 years ago, which are designed to work with 76 or 80 octane gasoline, there are several ways out of this situation:

  1. mill the cylinder head, thereby affecting the size of the combustion chamber;
  2. shift the ignition angle so that the process of ignition of the combustible mixture does not occur immediately when the exhaust valve opens;
  3. install additional gaskets on the cylinder head;
  4. lower the octane number of 92 fuel.

Let's look at how this is done in practice.

Advantages and disadvantages of a homemade mini tractor

Now you know how to make a mini tractor from a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.
But what is the advantage of such a transformation? Firstly, financial savings. After all, compact tractors on the market are expensive, so it will be much cheaper to buy a walk-behind tractor and modify it yourself. If you follow the instructions and drawings, it's not that difficult. Secondly, you will know the design of your equipment 100%, so you will be able to fix almost any problems yourself. That is, you don’t have to contact services, which will save time and money.

Thirdly, you will gain a very useful experience, so you can deservedly call yourself the Kulibin of our time. After all, not everyone can do such a modification, so if you succeeded, then this may well be considered a well-deserved reason for pride.

The disadvantages of homemade mini tractors with your own hands include the fact that with your own hands you will hardly be able to make a mini tractor that is similar in reliability to a factory one. Therefore, you should prepare for fairly frequent repairs and further improvement of your own equipment.

In addition, you may get injured during the process of altering the walk-behind tractor. What to pay attention to when remodeling?

It is necessary to take into account that a walk-behind tractor and a minitractor are types of equipment of different designs, therefore, when turning one type of equipment into another, you must take into account some of the features that the minitractor has.

So, you will sit on this type of equipment, which will significantly increase the center of gravity. This can have a negative impact on cornering, as your tractor may simply roll over. To avoid this, you need to widen the driven axle.

Then the area of the minitractor will also increase, and stability will accordingly increase. In addition, the wheelbase will clearly need to be expanded. Especially for this purpose, you can find bushings on sale that allow you to make the mini tractor more stable and wider without turning.

Motoblock destroys differential

Also, on small and medium-sized walk-behind tractors there is often no differential. To replace it, the easiest way is to install locking wheel extensions.

You also need to adhere to safety rules during the alteration itself, so as not to get injured. Work strictly according to the drawings, because this is a guarantee that everything will turn out right.

A mini tractor made from a walk-behind tractor with your own hands will become not just agricultural machinery, but also a real source of pride for any man.

Therefore, anyone who needs such a technique should try to make it themselves. Fortunately, all the necessary information for this is available, and materials are easy to purchase. Walk-behind tractors are very useful on the farm. But it often happens that people do not use old models.

The fate of such equipment very often is aimless stay in the garage and gradual rusting. The problem is that many people do not know that even old-style walk-behind tractors can be used to build the necessary equipment, for example, a mini tractor.

This machine will be extremely useful in agriculture, because it can be used to do a wide range of work. Therefore, even old walk-behind tractors can be very successfully used to create mini tractors that will be more than useful to you.

You can do this from a new walk-behind tractor if you think you need a compact tractor more.

Method 2: setting up the ignition

Another way by which you can transfer the engine of an Agro or Cascade walk-behind tractor to AI-92 is to re-adjust the initial ignition timing.

The process looks like this:

  1. empty the fuel tank;
  2. turn on the engine, giving the opportunity to use up the remaining gasoline in the carburetor;
  3. remove the tip of the spark plug;

  4. unscrew the bolt ties that hold the fan protection;
  5. remove the casing itself;
  6. loosen the flywheel tie;

  7. remove the ratchet and accompanying nuts and bolts;

  8. unscrew the central pin that holds the flywheel and pull it out of the housing;
  9. we determine where the installation mark for the ignition is located, marked on src=”https://pro-traktor.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/opredelyaem-gde-lokalizovana-ustanovochnaya-metka-dlya-zazhiganiya.png” class=”aligncenter” width=”400″ height=”265″[/img]
  10. take a screwdriver and slowly turn the magneto fasteners;
  11. carefully move the latter 2 mm to the left (counterclockwise);

  12. We begin assembling the motor block in the reverse order of disassembly.

During the assembly process you need to take into account that:

  • a key was installed on the crankshaft;
  • the flywheel nut was tightened with a force of no more than 16 kg/s and was covered with a locking washer on top;
  • Instead of the old spark plug, a new type A17B was installed.

After this, the engine can safely run on AI-92 fuel.

Types of mechanisms

According to the method of operation and action, all transforming mechanisms for walk-behind tractors are divided into several types:

  • angular;
  • downward;
  • reverse with reverse speed (reverse gearbox);

To redirect rotational energy from a vertical drive to a horizontal plane, an angular gearbox using bevel gears (bevel gearbox) is used.

Reducing the number of revolutions and increasing the power of the drive mechanism is provided by reduction gearboxes, or creepers for the walk-behind tractor. They are considered the most reliable for operating a diesel or gasoline air-cooled walk-behind tractor. This allows them to be used for particularly difficult work - for example, plowing heavy soil or harvesting potatoes using a potato digger.

In a special article you can find drawings of a potato digger for a walk-behind tractor.

Types of gearboxes

The design of any converting device for a walk-behind tractor (gearbox) consists of a set of motion-transmitting shafts or gears of different diameters, enclosed in a durable housing.

Converting devices are divided into several types according to the type of transmission:

  • chain;
  • belt;
  • gear;
  • worm (gear-worm);
  • combined systems.

For chain-type gearboxes, rotation transmission is provided using a chain and sprockets of different sizes, which are installed on rotary shafts. The operating principle of a belt mechanism is similar to a chain mechanism, but instead of sprockets and a chain, pulleys and a belt are used.

Inside the housing of the gear reducer there are shafts with gears mounted on them, having straight or oblique teeth. Gears transmit rotation from the engine to moving parts. Bevel gears are used in angular mechanisms for heavy walk-behind tractors.
