Features of parquet varnish and its types

Thanks to its unique technical characteristics, parquet paints and varnishes are able to protect wood materials that are vulnerable to moisture. By creating a protective and at the same time decorative layer, the parquet will not only look attractive, but will also not deform due to water absorption. All products on the market are divided into several groups according to their chemical composition, operational parameters, purpose, production technology and environmental friendliness. Based on these parameters, 4 classes were identified:

Acid-curing

This is a two-component and one-component type of parquet varnish, which is considered the most durable after hardening. This is due to the presence of formaldehyde resins. It is characterized by a high level of adhesion, low sensitivity to changes in temperature and humidity, and the possibility of application with brushes and rollers, spray guns, and spatulas. This material does not require preliminary priming, but when working with it it is necessary to reliably protect the eyes, nose and mouth from fumes.

Water based

The material is based on acrylic binders and other components. Acrylic parquet varnish is often used in educational institutions, children's institutions and residential buildings. Unlike other analogues, the material is considered environmentally friendly. Odorless parquet varnish also has disadvantages, the main one on the list is a low level of wear resistance, but this issue can be solved by adding solvents, for example, polyurethane type dispersion. The product is applied exclusively with high-quality rollers that are not capable of lifting the pile.

Polyurethane

Manufacturers of polyurethane paints and varnishes recommend using the products in rooms where the surface being treated will regularly be subject to abrasion. The composition is based on acrylic dispersion, as well as urethane resin and various solvents. The material is excellent for public institutions, sports sections, cafes, kitchens.

Alkyd compositions

Produced on the basis of alkyd oils and solvents. Such cladding can change the color of the wood structure, making it brighter and more contrasting. To work with this material, it is necessary to create individual conditions. During the drying period, the surface should not be exposed to direct sunlight; the coating should also be protected from intense heat (heating radiators) and provided with fresh air circulation.

How to make pine floor boards

Pine

- excellent building material. Houses are built from it and various lumber necessary for finishing and constructing buildings outside and inside is made. Responsible manufacturers of wooden products carry out a range of work on harvesting, drying, calibrating, culling and processing natural wood.

On special machines, pine logs are cut into boards of certain sizes, and the edges are trimmed. The resulting products are thoroughly dried so that they do not subsequently warp or turn blue on the floor. Among the finished products there are boards with a large number of knots and relief defects. They are used to create a subfloor. The conditioned material is subjected to shavings, grinding, the edges are perfectly aligned and impregnated with special compounds that protect it from rotting and insect invasion.

When heated too much, pine boards release resin. To avoid this during operation, they are coated with varnish, mastic or painted. Treated wood flooring boards made from natural pine have qualities that make them popular in the construction market.

The best water-based parquet varnish

Modern water-soluble varnish is obtained by mixing water with the other components of the composition. After this, the resulting mixture is diluted with a small amount of solvent so that its share does not exceed 15%. The finished surface is not designed to withstand excessive mechanical loads.

The choice of varnish depending on the type of wood

In order to varnish a floor covering beautifully and with high quality, you need to choose the right varnish for a wooden floor, taking into account the type of wood.

Larch

Larch boards are highly durable, resistant to moisture and rot. Larch is often used for lining baths or saunas. Larch boardwalks are good for gazebos, verandas or rooms with high humidity, such as a kitchen, sauna or bathroom.

To cover larch floors, water-soluble, alkyd or polyurethane compounds are used; for exterior work, acid-curing solutions are often used. You can choose the optimal composition for the finishing coating and the required quantity for the surface of a larch board, focusing on its location (at home or on the street) and the load (traffic) of the room.

In addition to the fact that larch boards are highly durable, they do not deform during use. How many layers of coating should I apply? At least two - it all depends on the composition of the drug.

Pine

Due to its soft structure, pine boards require a more careful selection of paint products. If you neglect this and buy a cheaper option, as many do when buying varnish for the floor in the country, then soon the varnished surface will begin to crack, and then it will no longer be able to fully protect the pine base from moisture, mold or mildew.

For painting, it is better to use urethane, polyurethane or epoxy preparations that have high strength and elasticity. Pine, like other soft woods, is recommended to be coated with several layers of paint and varnish. Material consumption will increase slightly, but the quality will be high.

Hardwood

For floors made of unstable types of wood (beech, ash, oak), special primer mixtures must be used before painting. After such preparation, alkyd or polyurethane compounds are applied - they will give the wood the necessary strength, protect it from moisture and mechanical damage, making it much easier to care for the floors.

Exotics

It is best to varnish exotic wood species after neutralizing the essential oils they release. The neutralizer is selected depending on the species, then the surface is primed and coated with any varnish, in accordance with the load on the floor surface and the influence of the environment on it.

Selection based on wood type

One of the essential criteria when choosing a floor covering is the type of wood that will be processed. The following information will help you choose the right foundation.

Hardwoods should be treated with products with good elasticity, which are possessed by polyurethane, urethane and alkyd-urethane bases

. If the material contains tannins, then after their use the surface of the boards will most likely darken. To avoid such unpleasant consequences, before applying the coating yourself, do not forget to treat the floor with a special primer (cutting).

Beech is an unstable type of wood, so here you also cannot do without a special primer, but with slightly different characteristics. To protect and decorate pine, and all coniferous trees in general, alkyd and urethane varnishes are chosen

. According to the instructions, before the main stage of work, the floor must be wiped with a cloth soaked in gasoline - this procedure will dissolve the remaining tree resin.

The only exceptions here will be those wood species that contain inhibitors that significantly slow down the drying process of the paintwork. And here again a cutting primer designed for working with heavy rocks will come to the rescue.

Rules for working with paints and varnishes on wood + technology

The ideal conditions for applying the composition to wood are windless, dry weather with a temperature not lower than +10 degrees. Ideally, the humidity level should not be higher than 80%, and the temperature should be from +15 to +35 degrees. Before you begin processing, you should prepare gloves, a mask and safety glasses. Such accessories are needed even if the work will be carried out outdoors and the material will be non-toxic.

Application of the composition will involve several interconnected stages:

  1. Tool selection –

For application, a roller, brush or spray is usually used. Brushes with natural bristles are perfect for applying oil varnish, and with synthetic bristles for creating a smooth surface. Rollers are useful for covering large areas, and sprayers are considered the most convenient tool with which you can treat not only fences and facades, but even hard-to-reach places.
  2. Surface preparation - to obtain excellent adhesion of wood and varnish, the surface should be prepared. Remove the old coating and fill the cracks and crevices with putty.
  3. Primer composition - this is not necessary every time, but it makes it possible to make the processing material smoother and also reduce material consumption.

By choosing the right wood varnish and following the application rules, you can get a perfectly smooth and aesthetic surface that will be perfectly protected from the effects of the external environment.

Instead of an epilogue

Today, choosing a varnish coating for parquet is not difficult. Both online stores and retail outlets offer a wide range of options to suit every taste and budget. Prices for this material vary very little from store to store, the difference can reach a maximum of 50-100 rubles. The main difficulty is the question of finding the required form of packaging - most stores try to sell varnishes in containers with overall volumes, but what to do if the buyer only needs a small amount for renewing? That’s why, before visiting a store, you need to study the information from its official website on the Internet and find out in what container the desired varnish is sold.

Among the popular manufacturers of these mixtures, there have been no significant changes over the past 20 years - Western brands are leading almost everywhere, and the domestic manufacturer has occupied a niche slightly below average.

When talking about buying for future use, preference should be given to samples with a long shelf life and universal scope of application.

Reasons for prolonged surface drying

If the technological regime is violated, the varnish may take a very long time to dry, and in some cases the surface will not dry at all. The following are the main factors that can cause a coating to take too long to dry:

  1. Low quality paint and varnish composition. This is most often the main reason. You should not skimp on varnish.
  2. Excessively thick layer of varnish on a wooden surface. The second and all subsequent layers of paint and varnish material are absorbed much worse than the first layer.
  3. Residues of foreign oils on the coating.
  4. The varnish does not match the primer or the type of wood.
  5. Failure to comply with proportions when preparing a two-component varnish.
  6. Increased humidity in the room.
  7. Violation of the recommended temperature regime.

Information about how long it takes for parquet varnish to dry is indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer. It is worth keeping in mind that this indicator is established on the basis of experiments in given climatic conditions (more precisely, in a certain microclimate). If in reality the humidity and temperature indicators differ from the recommended ones, the hardening time can change significantly, both for the better and for the worse.

Separately, it should be emphasized the importance of observing the recommended temperature and humidity parameters. The optimal temperature for drying paintwork is from 18 to 22 degrees above zero Celsius

If the temperature is too low, the varnish will take longer to harden than stated, and if the temperature is too high, the coating will dry out and cracks will appear in it.

Humidity level is another important parameter that affects drying speed. This is especially true for water-soluble compounds, since their hardening is based on the evaporation of moisture, as a result of which the concentration of film-forming substances increases. Of course, in conditions of high humidity (more than 50%) there can be no talk of rapid hardening of the surface.

Even if you use the fastest-drying varnish for parquet or other wooden products, the surface will have to be protected from mechanical damage in the first days. Also, do not allow dust or dirt to come into contact with varnished wood. If contamination occurs, it is recommended to wash it off with ordinary household chemicals.

Varnishing the floor in different rooms

The purpose of the room is also taken into account when choosing coverage

. Where frequent rearrangement of furniture and high traffic levels are planned, they rely on the durability of the varnish and choose expensive products. If the area is not subject to high traffic, a less expensive and less sustainable option may be available.

In a “wet area” (bathroom, kitchen, toilet, etc.), it is better to apply moisture-resistant materials yourself, which include urethane, polyurethane and urethane-alkyd bases. On steps, in reception areas, in halls and corridors, it is recommended to give preference to acid-hardening and polyurethane compositions.
