Repair of drill speed controller. Case from practice

When choosing a tool for professional builders, be sure to buy a low-speed drill. This device, thanks to the reduction in torsion speed, develops enormous power. Therefore, it can be used to mix concrete and drill large holes in very hard materials. Low-speed drills are good because even when doing significant work at high power they will not overheat. For comparison: trying to do the same thing with a simple tool can lead not only to its stopping, but even to breakage. Since low-torque drills are usually heavy, most of them are equipped with a pair of handles. Holding such a tool with both hands is both easier and safer. Well, our review will tell you which low-speed drills are most in demand on the modern market.

Choosing a low-speed drill for drilling timber

The power plant (in other words, the motor) of the drill used to drill into wood must be powerful enough. This allows you to work by creating holes of large diameter and noticeable depth. This is an objective fact: it is very difficult to explain correctly why a high-speed drill is not suitable for the same work. To do this, it would be necessary to briefly outline an entire section of physics here.

Another thing is more important: in order to pierce a pine board or panel with a twist drill with a diameter of 2.5 cm, it must be inserted into a drill with a power of 0.8 kW. Preference should be given to a tool that can operate at multiple speeds. For complete construction of a house from scratch, a 1.3 kW drill is suitable. Experts recommend choosing a model with a three-stage gearbox. When you plan to work in winter, it is advisable to use a drill with the thickest possible cord - it is the most reliable.

Information about the period of continuous operation will help determine whether a particular tool belongs to the professional class or not. Experienced builders need to keep the drill running continuously for at least 1 hour. In addition, unlike the household segment, such equipment performs only a narrow range of tasks.

Drill for the DIYer

Some of the hobbyists who often make things at home can get by with those simple drills, the models of which I gave just above. But someone may have a lot of work or it may be of a specific nature, so he needs a suitable unit for this. For various tasks, in addition to the most common single-speed impact drill, you may need the following devices:

  • unstressed
  • two-speed
  • slow-moving

Single-speed impact and non-impact drills can be considered from both professional and household classes - it all depends on the volume of work. It is better to take only household ones with two-speed and low-speed ones, since professional ones are too expensive. They justify themselves only in commercial activities. At home, even if you work with them quite often, you can get by with a household class.

Single speed impact drill

So, I already wrote about household drills of this type in the previous section. In most cases they are sufficient. But if you have large volumes of work, and therefore you have concerns that the household unit will not cope, then you can purchase the pro version. The most optimal model, in my opinion, here would be the Makita HP 1640. Its main advantages are:

  • good power of 680 W
  • precise operation of all mechanisms, even in comparison with other professional drills - there are absolutely no rustling or crackling noises during operation
  • mechanical reverse switch - that is, it is carried out by changing the position of the commutator brushes, which is much more reliable than an electronic one, when it is made in the form of a flag above the start button
  • rubberized body, thanks to which the instrument fits more confidently in the hands

You can also consider the HP 1620 drill from Makita. This is the predecessor model of the HP 1640, the main differences of which are slightly lower power (650 W) and a non-rubberized body.

Hammerless drill

Among the household shockless machines, I am most impressed by the Elitech D 550 RE. Despite its small dimensions, it has a good power of 550 W. In addition, the Elitech tool is of fairly good quality for its price. Less expensive electric drills in this class have worse performance. And those of comparable quality have less power.

If you want to have a small-sized professional-class hammerless drill, then the most popular models here will again be from Makita - and. Their main difference is in power: 450 and 530 W, respectively. Well, the first one is a little smaller in size.

Two speed drill

Of this type of drill, you can pay attention to the Zubr ZDU-1100-2 ERMM 2. The quality of the Zubr tool is similar to Elitech, but their two-speed model is cheaper, but at the same time has good power of 1100 W

In addition, this device is equipped with an impact mechanism, so it can also drill brick. There are no hammerless two-speed household drills on the market. Therefore, if you want to avoid a blow, you will have to choose from professionals. But, I repeat, their prices are steep. You can look here.

Low speed drill

Such machines, unlike other drills, have a reduced speed. That's why they are called low-speed. If in most electric drills the chuck rotates at a speed of 2500-3000 rpm, then on low-speed drills this figure does not exceed 600.

The speed is reduced due to the operation of the gearbox. As a result of this reduction, coupled with high engine power (more than 1000 W), a large torque is obtained at the output. For this reason, such units are useful in jobs where there is increased resistance to rotation. This, for example, is drilling in wood with large-diameter drills (more than 25 mm) or mixing various building mixtures with a large-diameter mixer attachment.

The model I recommend here is Interskol D-16/1050R2. This manufacturer is famous for its good quality in the household class, while its low-speed drill, while not inferior to others in characteristics, is cheaper.

These were my tips on choosing a drill for your home. I hope I was able to explain to you what's what here. Well, I’m finishing this text - see you!

Ammo

Impact drills are equipped with two types of chucks - key and quick-release chucks .

In a key chuck (also called a toothed chuck), the drill is secured using a special key.

The keyless chuck allows you to secure the drill without the help of tools. To secure the drill in such a chuck, a little hand effort is enough. There are two types of keyless chucks.

Double-sleeve cartridges have two rotating rings (one of them is held by hand, and by turning the second one the drill is clamped and released). Easier to handle, single-sleeve chucks offer the most convenient way to change drill bits. They work in conjunction with the spindle lock button.

The chucks also differ in the maximum drill diameter they can clamp. The most common sizes are 10, 13, 16 mm. For home use, a drill with a 13 mm chuck is sufficient.

How to choose a nozzle

If for some reason the device was missing a nozzle, it is important to know how to select it correctly. Most models have a special standard thread on the spindle, which allows you to securely fix the nozzle. This standard has been adopted by many major manufacturers and, at the moment, choosing a suitable nozzle is not difficult.

Many models are equipped with a movable coupling with a self-clamping mechanism. A key for such tools is not required, and the diameter of the drill or stirrer can be selected independently using the information provided in the operating instructions.

Movable coupling with self-clamping mechanism

The maximum nozzle size is set by the manufacturer. This indicator depends on the technical characteristics of the device.

Precautions when using a drill

  1. In particularly dusty areas of work, use masks and gloves.
  2. Wear earplugs or antiphons while working. A drill is a fairly loud tool. Noise has a negative impact on human health, causes a feeling of nervousness, tires and leads to disruption of the vestibular system. Manufacturers work seriously to reduce vibration and noise, but it is better to protect yourself.
  3. Take breaks from work for 15–20 minutes. This will not only give the instrument a chance to rest, but it will also be useful for you to relax after the vibration load.
  4. Keep the drill out of the reach of children.
  5. Make sure the drill is in good working order. The wire must always be without breaking the insulation, and also avoid getting water on it during operation.
  6. Take care of the device by wiping it from dirt. After all, fine particles getting inside the instrument can render it unusable, or, at best, lead to repair.

Types of powerful drills

It’s worth starting with the fundamental difference between mains and battery models. Traditional corded drills are characterized by high power and low weight, which increases ergonomics when working with them. But being tied to an outlet limits their scope of application. Actually, this is the main advantage of models with batteries - they are autonomous and can be used at a distance from power sources. On the other hand, even powerful cordless drills are equipped with gearboxes with a low gear ratio, which also results in a limited number of supported speeds (2-3). The disadvantages of battery modifications include larger sizes due to the integrated unit with the battery. At a minimum, it adds weight, but, as already mentioned, it is in relation to a powerful instrument that balanced mass is a plus.

Drills also differ in design. Manufacturers produce models with angular, straight and pistol-shaped bodies. The choice of one design or another is determined by the operating conditions of the instrument, but the classic pistol-shaped device is considered universal. A separate category is represented by a powerful drill with two speeds, designed for stirring liquid and bulk building materials. These models have a reinforced gearbox and increased rotation speed. Two speeds make it possible to stir both viscous and fluid solutions with optimal torque

But the most important thing is that the design of the handles is specifically oriented towards vertical support perpendicular to the floor. The operator holds the drill mixer by two handles, pointing down the specially shaped nozzle

Question from a reader

Reader Alexander contacted me by email with the following request:

Good evening. I came across your blog where you repair a Bosch drill. I have a similar problem, but I have almost nothing to do with electronics. Stupidly I disassembled the trigger of a Bosch GSB 1600 RE drill. Everything worked great before, I put it together somehow, but now the soft start doesn’t work. Perhaps I’m putting the parts in the wrong order and in the wrong place. I am attaching a photo of the disassembled one. I hope this helps, the drill is good.

Which drill to choose and what to pay attention to

The types of drills are extremely varied: a cordless drill or a regular one, powered from the network, may be suitable for a master.

Main parameters and criteria for selection:

  • convenience – this is the most important thing in work, otherwise the master will get tired quickly;
  • functions for fixing buttons and limiting drilling depth;
  • the presence of an emergency stop of the engine - its brake;
  • possibility of reverse movement of the working body;
  • backlight lamp;
  • various positions for additional handle;
  • general equipment and additional options - must correspond to what is required for the job;
  • anti-vibration - no comment.

However, this is not all - more can be understood from the characteristics of the models and what is required for the specific planned work.

There is more than enough to choose from. Today's choice is rich in trademarks: from the well-known Interskol and Makita to poorly studied and new LLCs and Ltd.
