Restoration and renovation of metal entrance doors

An iron front door has ceased to be a sign of wealth and has become the norm. Today, there are several classes of iron doors, guided by the characteristics of armor resistance, quality of fittings, finishing and the presence of additional functions and elements. The question of upgrading the front door arises in two cases: if you want to give a presentable appearance to an old door, or if you once saved on aesthetics and bought a new, but completely unremarkable iron front door.

What is door restoration

Metal entrance doors are very popular, this is explained by their high reliability, durability, beautiful appearance and long service life. If a high-quality structure is installed, it will serve reliably for several decades. During operation of the front door, it is exposed to the negative influence of external factors, so over time it loses its original appearance. Situations may arise when the design of the house has been changed inside or outside and the old door does not fit into it. In such cases, there is no need to rush to change the front door, it can be restored, it is not very difficult and you can handle this kind of work yourself.

Before deciding on the need to restore the front door, you first need to check its functionality and determine whether it has retained its heat and sound insulation characteristics. In most cases, the design remains fully functional, so to update it, you just need to change the appearance.

It is much cheaper to restore a metal entrance door than to install a new one

When dismantling an old door and installing a new one, you will have to refinish the doorway, and this not only requires additional funds, but there will also be a lot of dust and debris in the house. During the restoration of the door leaf, it is not necessary to dismantle it; such work is dust-free and everything can be done independently. Depending on the restoration method chosen, you will need a maximum of 40% of the cost of the new door. If you have high-quality doors installed, then you should not rush to replace them; you risk purchasing low-quality structures. By restoring your front door, you get a beautiful and reliable solution, improve its sound and heat insulation characteristics and at the same time save significant money.

Other finishing options

A metal entrance door with slopes, of course, can simply be painted or covered with liquid wallpaper, decorated with buckwheat, mirrors, giving them a vintage style. If you use your imagination, you can come up with a lot of creative options. The main thing is that the canvas is pre-prepared: a layer of old paint is removed, holes, cracks, scratches on the surface of the door and slopes are puttied. All irregularities need to be eliminated. Further:

  • apply an alkyd primer for additional adhesion of the working fabric of the partition and slopes with liquid wallpaper;
  • apply a layer of white putty;
  • dilute the dry composition with warm water to obtain liquid wallpaper;
  • add the desired color to achieve the desired color;
  • let the mixture brew for at least 8 hours;
  • coat the door leaf and slopes with the mixture using a spatula, stretching the composition in different directions to obtain the desired pattern;
  • apply liquid wallpaper so that there are no distortions;
  • go over the wallpaper with a textured roller, ensuring a tighter fit to the canvas and slopes to give the surface the desired texture;
  • leave until completely dry;
  • The top can be coated with a layer of clear varnish.

Liquid wallpaper is great for decoupage of old entrance doors and slopes, but they are not resistant to moisture, so they are not suitable for finishing a kitchen or bathroom.

Liquid wallpaper allows you to decorate the canvas with any patterns and shapes

Mirror decoration looks original if you want to visually expand the space and bring more light into the room.

Today, acrylic mirrors are sold in a variety of colors, and it is not difficult to choose the right shade or even several to reproduce the mirror panel on your door. Manufacturers offer almost weightless plexiglass for door decoration, although this is not the cheapest option.

For a mirror finish on a door you also need:

  • level;
  • coat with putty;
  • eliminate all recesses and irregularities;
  • attach the mirror plastic, having previously treated the back side of the canvas with a primer;
  • apply a layer of mounting adhesive after the primer has dried;
  • Carefully glue the panels to the door leaf around the perimeter.

Interesting and original options are when using shaped acrylic mirrors as beautiful elements attached to the center of the door, or buckwheat husk, used as a simple material for finishing the front door and slopes. When using husks you need:

  • remove a layer of old paint;
  • putty all the unevenness;
  • place the door on a stool or chair;
  • paint the canvas dark brown;
  • coat with PVC glue;
  • lay out the husks, spreading them evenly over the entire surface with your hands, imitating a pattern; you can add glitter;
  • Cover the top with matte or glossy varnish in 2-3 layers to better attach the buckwheat to the canvas. The door is ready.

If you want to restore an old door with adjacent slopes in a vintage style that can add sophistication to the room, then for decoration you will need:

  • roller;
  • assembly adhesive;
  • black baguette;
  • PVC glue, brush;
  • transparent glue;
  • sandpaper.

For decoupage you should:

  • sand the canvas, and, if necessary, the slopes, ridding them of old paint;
  • go over the wood with sandpaper to achieve an antique effect;
  • decorate with panels over the entire surface of the door or only in the center;
  • tear old newspaper into small pieces, triangles, squares;
  • coat them with glue;
  • lay out in a chaotic order;
  • smooth with your hands;
  • Apply 2 layers of transparent varnish on top;
  • attach a black baguette around the perimeter of the door;
  • decorate as desired with lace, bows, wreaths, and beads with imitation pearls.

Aging a door leaf using decoupage
The main thing is to use your imagination and create your own finishing masterpiece from scrap materials available in your home arsenal. It is quite possible to decorate a metal front door with your own hands, which will be inexpensive and beautiful.

Today, it is expensive for many citizens to completely repair a metal door, and they have to pay a lot of money for the installation of new doors. You can do the finishing using scraps, remnants of laminate, or simply equip the door and the perimeter slopes with decorative overlays, giving the door leaf a unique look and thereby transforming the old door block beyond recognition.

Plasterboard slopes

It is impossible to simply make slopes using drywall. This material is the basis for subsequent installation. Before fixing it, the wall surface is primed and leveled.

When installing an iron structure, first the primer is dried. While it dries, the necessary measurements are taken and the sheet material is cut. Measurements must be taken carefully, as the opening may have a slope, and the part will need to be cut at some angle.

You can outsource such work to a specialist, but this will require financial costs. Therefore, in order to save money, many do this work themselves.

The platbands, together with the trim, are attached with dowels or special glue. Today glue has gained popularity. Before finishing begins, the side panels are installed first, followed by the top trim.

The technique of finishing with glue is simple. It is applied in the form of cakes with a step of 10-15 cm. It can also be applied in a continuous layer. To obtain even corners, use a special perforated corner.

Types of doorways

Before you start designing a doorway, you need to figure out what they are:

Standard rectangular shape. Most often found in residential areas. In this case, it is much more difficult to decide how to finish the slope, because there are a lot of options and the greatest difficulty is in determining the material that will be as practical as possible and will not cause big problems during the finishing work.

Arch. It looks very stylish and unusual, but during finishing it can cause technical difficulties and, on top of that, not all finishing materials may be suitable. In addition to branded overlays, in this case it is advisable to use drywall, plaster or elastic polyurethane materials.

Preparatory work

Before you start using one or another finishing material, you need to prepare the slope so that it is smooth, neat and in the future to avoid correcting possible problems.

Preparatory work is carried out in the following steps:

  1. The surface of the slopes is cleared of the remnants of old plaster, and if it crumbles, then it must be knocked down completely;
  2. If the slopes are improved after installing a new entrance door, then excess foam will be visible, which should definitely be removed with a utility knife;
  3. All existing joints and cracks are carefully coated;
  4. All areas are carefully coated with plaster, but if the slopes are decorated with sheet or panel materials, then the surface may not be leveled to perfection;
  5. A primer must be applied to the plaster, which will prevent the appearance of mold and mildew, and also improve adhesion, especially if after this the slopes will be finished with decorative mixtures;
  6. When applying plaster, it is necessary to ensure that there are completely no small cracks, which can subsequently cause constant drafts;
  7. After all the activities have been completed, the slopes are equipped with decorative elements.

Colors

Slopes are a small detail that can either support the style in the interior or completely break out of it.
An inappropriate color of decoration will become an element that violates the integrity of the overall picture, so it is important to choose the right color in accordance with the design of the door and the decoration of the walls, floor and ceiling in indoors

The color of the slopes directly depends on the selected material:

Tree and its derivatives. This group includes all materials in the production of which wood was used in one way or another. These include classic solid wood panels, lining, and all slabs pressed from chips and adhesives, veneer, and laminate. Accordingly, the color palette is varied, but does not go beyond natural colors: pine, spruce, poplar, ash, bleached oak, stained oak, pink oak, light walnut, medium walnut, dark walnut, red maple, mahogany, antique pine, Douglas . Chic colors are collected in a dark palette of natural and synthetic origin: cherry, mahogany, wenge, chocolate, teak, Indiana, Macassar, Locarno apple.

Wood paneling

Solid wood is considered the most expensive material for cladding entrance doors. As a rule, it is used to decorate metal structures not only from the inside, but also from the outside. Wooden panels with carved or scorched patterns, as well as milled finishes, look very beautiful.

Noble wood adds elegance and style to even the simplest door panels, makes the entrance to a home unique and speaks of the high status of its owners. The original texture of the material and exquisite decorative elements make the door the center of external or internal design. The combination of wood and metal looks unique and beautiful, so you can add forged parts and fancy fittings to the cladding.

Selection of materials

Yes, the slopes perform a protective function, but no one took away their decorative function. And you can use a lot of different materials to decorate them. The main requirement for them is the absence of fragility and tendency to mechanical damage. The slopes must be finished so that they can last for many years without the need for repairs, not even major repairs, but cosmetic ones. Moreover, it is worth considering that the doorway is the place where all family members pass every day, and more than once, something constantly falls here, the door and the slopes themselves can be subject to impacts. So the material for finishing them needs to be one that can withstand all these loads for a long time and not deteriorate.

Vinyl cladding

The composition of sheets made of polyvinyl chloride plastic mass, called vinyl plastic, includes thermal and light stabilizers, which increase their resistance to adverse influences and improve performance characteristics. For cladding door panels, a special grade of vinyl plastic is used - VD, called decorative. The panels of this brand have a thickness that is ideal for work - it is 1.5-3.0 mm.

Viniplast is a panel consisting of two layers: PVC and high-hardness fiberboard.

Vinyl plastic cladding tolerates temperature fluctuations well, is resistant to mechanical stress and is a material that is safe for human health.

How to decorate the front door in a private house or apartment with your own hands

Correctly finishing a modern front door from the inside with your own hands requires a fairly large amount of work and the presence of some tools. The decor depends on whether the door is iron or wooden. To install a three-dimensional design on a metal door, a special synthetic resin is purchased.

The work does not require the use of physical force - even women can do it.

Required Tools

To work you will need different tools:

  • metal tape measure;
  • pencil for marking;
  • hammer;
  • glue;
  • perforator;
  • screwdriver

Methods for creating decorative finishes

To create a unique decor, frame or frameless finishing methods are used. They differ in structural strength and labor intensity of the process.

Interior decoration can be chosen to suit every taste, the main thing is that it is made from environmentally friendly material.

Frame

All frame elements are made of wood or aluminum corners. The structure is assembled and installed entirely.

Without proper protection, plastered corners will quickly begin to crumble and lose their presentable appearance.

Frameless

With frameless design, the arch trim, as well as platbands, are mounted on pre-leveled surfaces. This option is simpler, but less maintainable.

Plastering is necessary to fill irregularities, depressions or cracks in the wall.

How to decorate slopes

The space of the slopes is decorated with natural wood veneer, boards, plastic, MDF and fiberboard. Finishing with plaster followed by painting also looks good.

Porcelain stoneware is a noble and high-quality material, but the color spectrum is very limited.

How to remove the cladding

In cases such as interior renovation, severe damage to the coating, the lining is removed from the doors. The removal process depends on the type of finishing material. The door will have to be removed from its hinges, laid horizontally, the fittings removed, and the nails that secure the trim in place.

Modern technologies make it possible to decorate doors in various ways - everything depends on the taste and capabilities of the owners.
