Design of a narrow long bedroom: 13 tips and 65 photos for inspiration

A small bedroom requires extra effort to make it comfortable and cozy. Its interior, like the design of a large bedroom, is of great importance. A person spends a third of his life sleeping. What he feels and sees in front of him affects the quality of his sleep.

Redevelopment

It often turns out that it is impossible to place all the necessary zones in an elongated room and bring design ideas to life without redevelopment.

The simplest solution in such a situation may be to move the door. Thus, an entrance located approximately in the center of one of the long walls gives more room for maneuver than a door located along a short wall.

Nothing extra

A small room can only be a death sentence if you allow it to happen. In fact, in a room of this size, you can easily place a full double bed and even a wardrobe, large enough for 2 people to use it at once.

First, we need to study the photo of a 9 square meter bedroom. m., to understand what we have to deal with.

It is important to understand that only important and useful things for us will be in the room, and on a daily basis, we will not put anything unnecessary.

In addition, you need to realize now that such a room will not have any additional areas, such as a work area or a place with a makeup table - this room is for sleeping and storing things.

Visually “broken” space

An effective way to get away from the feeling of a small, narrow bedroom is the “broken” layout design technique (the photo below shows examples of such a solution). The interior design uses atypical lines, bold geometry, dynamic composition, and unexpected silhouettes. As a result, the original shape of the room is literally lost against this background - and recedes into the background.

Using Accessories

In a small bedroom, even the little things in the interior deserve close attention.

You can add variety to your environment by:

  • several small mirrors;
  • photographs and paintings in frames, made in soothing colors;
  • bright, colorful pillows and rugs that match the interior;
  • ikebana and figurines.

You can diversify the space with unusual clocks or lamps. The main thing is to observe moderation.

Wardrobes on each side of the bed

A really working, practical way to slightly adjust the layout of a trailer bedroom is to place cabinets, shelving or entire storage systems on the sides of the bed (instead of bedside tables or in addition to them). Thanks to this design move, it seems that the bed is placed in some kind of niche - and the configuration of the room is perceived differently.

Style selection

The first step in arranging a bedroom is choosing a style, which will not only help you decide on further decoration, but will also tell you about the owner. The most suitable options for small rooms are presented in the table.

StyleDescription
MinimalismThe most common option for small spaces. They use only what is necessary, without unnecessary details or decoration. The geometric shapes are clear, the colors are calm, and there are no bright details to be found. Contrast is not encouraged; shades should be slightly lighter or darker than the main color.
ClassicThe lines are laconic and clear. The material is exclusively natural. If the budget is limited, imitation wood for MDF furniture is possible. They use textiles, floral patterns, muted colors, tending to natural ones. An accent in the form of mirrors and sculptural fragments is possible.
High techThis is an innovative solution, the use of progressive elements such as a transformable bed, drawers and shelves. The atmosphere is calm and at the same time contrasting combinations are allowed, uplifting the mood in the morning and providing relaxation in the evening.
JapaneseReminiscent of minimalism, complemented by elements in the Japanese style. The furniture is no frills, simple, low. The color chosen is natural, pastel, the lighting is dim. A distinctive feature is decorating the bedroom with decor related to Japanese culture.

Functional window unit

A functional area located in close proximity to a window unit or balcony is another opportunity to clearly improve the design of a narrow bedroom with a window at the end.

In this part of the room you can place, for example:

  • storage system;
  • home mini-office;
  • lounge area.

Classic direction

From the photo of the design of a small bedroom in a classic style, it is clear that this is a direction for connoisseurs of luxury. Golden and silver patterns are required here, which go perfectly with white, soft pink, beige and light purple.

A crystal chandelier and stucco will highlight the rich furnishings.

Carved furniture will create a royal atmosphere. White leather is suitable for the headboard of the bed. The windows are decorated with luxurious velvet and satin fabrics to match the overall picture.

Similar textiles can be used for a canopy. And most importantly - a lot of light, it will make a miniature bedroom larger.

Lower ceiling

A trick that will help you get away from the feeling of a trailer room in a narrow bedroom is a design with a decrease in ceiling height (the real photos below are prime examples of this).

Moreover, this can be either a really low ceiling level (including only partially), or a visual reduction in the height of the room. You can visually lower the ceiling, for example, using horizontal stripes on the walls (wallpaper with a corresponding pattern, painting method, wall panels, moldings).

“Khrushchevka” is a tough nut to crack

It is in the interior of a tiny, extremely narrow bedroom with a width of 2.25 m that design talent, ingenuity and non-stereotypical thinking are undeniably and clearly demonstrated.
To begin with, we note that everything said in the chapter about small narrow rooms and the choice of style is also true for the “Khrushchev”. All the secrets of visually adjusting space, described in the chapter on long narrow rooms, work here too, but you will have to forget about zoning - this room is too small to allocate any special area for work and rest. If you still need a place for a computer or cosmetics, you will most likely have to find a universal use for a small chest of drawers or a console table.

Narrow console shelves, white on a white wall, are a lifesaver when you need to allocate space for books, jewelry or other oversized items that are convenient to have on hand.

interior of a children's room for two children
The choice of bedroom interior style as applied to a narrow "Khrushchev" is extremely limited - minimalism, maybe Provence and with great doubt - art deco, but the success of the project depends, first of all, on the artistic taste and ingenuity of the designer . And most importantly, there is nothing worse than mixing styles in a cramped room.

Creative solutions

Small tricks save you from big problems. Such a narrow bedroom can become a serious test for the nerves if it is dark, filled with furniture to the point where it is impossible to squeeze through. Therefore, anything that can free up space or create the illusion of a wider room is for the good.

A light floor, white walls and ceiling are beyond competition, a warm smoky shade and a large, thin pattern for narrow walls are very interesting. Ideally, curtains should follow the pattern of the wallpaper on the wall and blend in with it. This will shorten the room slightly.

How can I make it wider?

By moving the bed to the podium, a narrow room becomes more spacious

10 tips that may come in handy

  1. The room appears wider if you illuminate a long white wall with spotlights.
  2. The color of short walls should not match the color of the floor.
  3. A large, almost full-height mirror in the center of a long wall can create a wide opening and, as it were, a continuation of the room in width, but it will soon become tiring.
  4. It will be more interesting if the mirror is not solid, but cut into vertical or horizontal stripes, spaced from each other - imitating a lattice behind which the room “continues”.
  5. A similar effect is achieved if the mirrored cabinet doors are decorated with small panels.
  6. Instead of photographs, place a dense composition of mirrors in photo frames on the walls - this is very decorative and opens up space for the gaze to rest against a nearby wall.

    location of a small dressing room at the head of the bed to save space

  7. Use low furniture with thin legs.
  8. A console table-shelf without legs is ideal for such a narrow bedroom, if you really cannot do without a table. You can even find a model with drawers.
  9. Remove everything out of season and rarely used from the bedroom - there are closets and mezzanines for this.
  10. In color, give preference to tonal combinations. But 2-3 bright spots to avoid monotony are quite acceptable.

There is no need to be afraid of difficult tasks - there are always interesting solutions for them. To turn an uncomfortable narrow room into a comfortable bedroom with a stylish interior - what could bring more pleasure?

Off center

A simple and really working technique is to shift the axis of symmetry of an elongated room relative to the center.

This can be implemented with:

  • appropriate finishing;
  • placing lamps not in the center of the ceiling, but to the left or right of the axis of symmetry;
  • arranging furniture along one of the walls;
  • designing one of the long walls as an accent wall.

Tip 5. Soft and uniform lighting is the key to comfort

When planning the design of a narrow nursery, you should not limit yourself to just one central ceiling chandelier - it will create sharp shadows and thereby reduce the space. To visually expand it, you need to arrange the light sources as evenly as possible. For example, these could be inconspicuous spots along the entire perimeter of the ceiling and/or local lamps in different places - on the chest of drawers, above the closet, on the table, above the bed, etc. Then the lighting will be soft, diffused and cozy.

  • The lamps themselves should not be bulky or too elegant.

Niches

Sometimes a trailer room is so cramped that even placing a full-fledged sleeping place in it is unrealistic (in Khrushchev-era buildings this can be only a few square meters). In such cases, you can opt for a narrow bedroom design with a sofa instead of a bed. Or create niches in the wall that will help you gain some useful space.

Furniture arrangement

Functional use of available space is the main rule in the interior of a 3 by 4 meter bedroom.

To accomplish this, you should use the following principles:

  1. When choosing a bed, it is important to be guided by the comfort of sleep and compliance with the parameters of the room. If a spacious sleeping area seems like an unjustified waste of free space, you can choose a model without legs. Then its lower part will become a place for storing bedding. The bed, which slides into the podium, looks original. This option saves space without losing comfort while sleeping.
  2. The location of the bed in space also matters. Designers recommend placing it diagonally from the door. And a certain distance from the battery will protect a sleeping person from the harmful effects of dry air.
  3. For a small room, sliding wardrobes with mirrored sliding options are convenient. These models create ample storage space without taking up much space.
  4. For toiletries, keep a table next to your bed. If you have more drawers, you can replace it with a cabinet or chest of drawers.
  5. Shelves and racks are introduced into the space as needed. For example, through structures are necessary when separating a bedroom in a studio apartment.

Additional items for the bedroom include chairs and armchairs. If their presence is justified, it is worth strictly regulating their number so as not to overload the space.

Distraction

Bright, active decorative elements, unexpected design techniques, active prints can distract attention from even the most unsuccessful layout.

Provence

Connoisseurs of romance and French atmosphere can safely choose the Provence style. There is a delicate pastel palette here - light blue, white-pink and pale purple.

Textiles with small polka dots or flowers. A bedroom in a small room should have as simple furniture as possible. Light-colored wood or white-painted surfaces look great.

Play of light

Lighting is another assistant in adjusting the configuration of an elongated, narrow room. You can go two ways: choose a light color scheme, let in more sunlight and provide sufficient artificial lighting - this will make the space visually seem more spacious.

Or, on the contrary, you can make a choice in favor of a deep, dark palette, a chamber mood, diffused soft light, darkened corners. The room may lose volume, but its shape will be much less noticeable.

Tip 7. Finishing touches - the right decor and curtains

  • As for the decor, in a narrow room it is better not to overdo it, but since we are still talking about the design of a children's room, you cannot do without decorations at all. You can hang a garland of flags or pompoms (preferably across the room as in the previous right photo) and hang a few paintings - this will be quite enough, because an abundance of bright toys, books and other things will help to dilute the calm interior.
  • What should curtains be like? Of course, light, bright and laconic. Suitable styles are Roman, roller, classic and panel curtains.

  • And finally, we’ll share with you a great idea on how you can make a child’s space more interesting without taking up a single extra centimeter - just hang chalk wallpaper on the door or part of the wall as shown in the photo.
