Sanders are good for more than just smoothing lumber. Removing layers of paint, rough processing of metal, fine finishing of surfaces before finishing work - this is an incomplete list of processes available to the lucky person with a grinder.
In this article we offer you:
- consider the rating of grinding machines;
- determine the range of proposed work;
- choose the appropriate equipment.
Table of main selection criteria
Criterias of choice | Feature Options | Distinctive properties and features of the equipment |
Power type | From the mains | Wide power range. Electronic control systems are used to the maximum. You can choose a tool for working with wood, metal, plastic. |
From battery | Light weight, mobility. Suitable for small one-time jobs at room temperature.
Pneumatic | Simplicity of design. Long-term operation without overheating and excessive wear of critical components. To operate efficiently, you need a powerful compressor.
Method of movement of the working unit with consumables | Straight-line continuous feed of abrasive | Band tools – for rough or fine processing of large volumes (lumber, sheet metal and products made from them). Brush – for textured surfaces (processing of embossed steel sheets, artificial aging of wood). |
Vibration without rotation | Reciprocating movements with a small stroke amplitude provide high-quality results when finely sanding floors, polishing wooden decor and treating walls and ceilings before painting.
Orbital (rotating) eccentric with vibration | High productivity in cleaning, grinding, polishing (cars, furniture, interior decoration, processing of metal structures).
Type of moving part of the tool | Straight shaft | Precise work with small details of carved elements made of wood and plastic. Only straight CMM models. |
Circle | Rough cleaning and fine polishing of any surfaces.
Corner options (“delta”, “iron”, with an additional corner) | Effective processing of shaped products (door leaf, decoration of an arched opening, joints of metal structures).
Rectangle | Belt and surface grinding tools. For pshm, this base shape combines the capabilities of round and triangular soles.
Method of consumable fixation | "Velcro" (Velcro) | Large hooks are optimal for working with wood. Small - for circles for processing painted metal, putty surfaces. |
Mechanical clamps | Preparing walls, plywood, furniture panels for painting.

Drive and driven shafts | Tape models. Processing of construction lumber (timbers, boards). Preparation of wood products (countertops, stair steps, furniture panels, floor coverings) and metal for painting.
Vibration amplitude (orbit), mm | Up to 5 | Fine grinding, polishing wood, metal, plastic, glass. The lower the declared value, the more accurately the top layer is removed. |
Over 5 | Rough surface treatment of timber and lumber, removal of paintwork and traces of corrosion from metal surfaces.
Variable | The design of the gearbox allows you to work with the desired amplitude (no more than 2 options) required for a specific task (material).
Weight, kg | Up to 2 | Ease of use on walls and ceilings. |
Over 2 | Effective: polishing, grinding and cleaning surfaces (car body, buildings and wood products, metal structures) located below the level of the master’s shoulders. |
Before you begin to familiarize yourself with the capabilities of the most popular models, you should remember two facts:
- Each variety has a fairly narrow range of applications. Multifunctionality is characteristic only of renovators, but the volume of work that MFPs can handle does not allow them to be considered as the main tool, even for an enthusiastic amateur;
- The opinion that an angle grinder (angle grinder) in capable hands can cope with any task (from removing paint to sharpening drills and saw chains) is not supported by reliable facts. In 99 cases out of 100, such “versatility” is associated with a violation of safety regulations.

Classification of tools
In stores you can find grinding machines designed for household or professional needs. Each type has its own characteristics, which it is advisable to know about before purchasing.
Household
A household tool is chosen if you have to work with it irregularly. On average, CMMs are designed to operate for 20 hours per month from 220 V, which is much less when compared with professional samples.
Every 15 minutes of working with a household grinder, you must stop for 10-15 minutes, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the engine.
Attention! Manufacturers do not recommend working with the device for more than 3 hours during the day. If you need more, you will have to abandon the household device in favor of a more serious one.
The advantages of a household unit are its affordable price and ease of operation.
Professional
This type of tool is designed to work continuously for a long time. Typically, professional grinding machines are used in production. They are much more reliable than household ones because they are made from higher quality materials.
The equipment is designed for multi-shift work in intensive mode. The devices are quite large, since a more powerful motor is located inside the case.
When developing a grinding machine for professional use, not only production requirements are taken into account, but also criteria such as convenience and safety. Therefore, manufacturers produce equipment that creates a minimum of vibration.

Interskol PShM-32/130
at prices starting from RUB 1,618.
Compact tool PShM-32/130 with a delta-shaped sole for fine grinding at corner joints and on a relief surface (a paneled door made of solid wood, for example). Access to any corner is ensured by the tapered sole. The combination of minimal amplitude and low vibration frequency of the platform guarantees professional quality:
- when removing single-layer coatings (coarse-grain consumables are needed);
- when sanding smooth changes (fine sandpaper will be required);
- when dry polishing protective layers of paints and varnishes (with a suitable soft nozzle).
The connection of the consumable to the sole is made using the Velcro system (also known as Velcro), which securely holds the abrasive sheet during operation.
If you do not have the necessary consumables, they can be cut out of sandpaper with a felt layer. For full operation of the built-in dust removal system, it is necessary to make holes in the self-cut sheets according to the sole template. The main thing is not to subject this amateur tool to constant intense loads, and to blow all holes with compressed air after finishing work. Main technical characteristics of PShM-32/130

Types, purpose, features of work
There are different types of sanders that do the same type of work but with different results. There are tools for coarse (preliminary), medium (intermediate) and fine (finish) grinding. Part of the tool can even perform polishing.
A wood sanding machine can be of different shapes, sizes, and performance.
To choose a wood sander, you first need to decide what type of work you need it for. For rough grinding - leveling out unevenness, differences in height - one type is suitable, for finishing grinding - bringing it to perfection - another type. Moreover, both problems can be solved using different types of equipment.
Angle grinder - angle grinder
The well-known grinder can also be used for sanding wood. It copes well with the rough grinding function. Of all the possible tools, this is the most productive. If you need to quickly level large wooden surfaces - sanding the floor, wall, frame - this is work for an angle grinder. The downside is that the surface turns out to be very uneven, and it takes a long time to level out all the holes and humps. If this still “passes” on the log house, then the result for any carpentry work is unsatisfactory. Unless you can purchase another tool, you should not use an angle grinder for sanding wood.
For wood, use red sanding wheels - this is a special abrasive
There are special attachments for grinders for sanding wood. The best option is flap or disc wheels with sandpaper of different grits. When they are installed, the working plane is below the protective casing, it is safe to work, and you can move in any direction. Carefully handle areas with protruding nail heads and screws. We lower the tool from above and carefully move it. A sharp movement can easily break the grinding wheel, so be careful.
By changing the grain size of the grinding wheels used, you can carry out coarse and medium (intermediate) grinding. The work will take less time than if you use any other wood sander. But it may take more time to bring it to a smooth surface, since, with a lack of experience, there will be more flaws.
When sanding wood, the sandpaper becomes clogged and the speed of work decreases. In addition to a decrease in speed, there is another sign - the smell of burnt wood. It is not necessary to immediately change the disk; you can restore its functionality. To do this, grind the metal for a few seconds. Everything stuck to it—resin, wood fibers, dust—burns off, the surface is cleaned, and the processing speed increases again. This trick, by the way, can be used with other grinders.
This attachment is used if you need to quickly change sandpaper.
If you have to clean and change the wheels frequently, install a Velcro attachment on the grinder. Replacing the sandpaper is much easier and faster - unstick/stick in a matter of seconds. But working with the nozzle is more dangerous. Due to its height, the grinding area is above the level of the protective casing; it does not fulfill its functions. During the launch, it happens that a precariously fixed circle or even the nozzle itself flies off. They weigh little, the injuries are not serious, but they are still injuries. An angle grinder with a smooth start helps reduce risks, but, all the same, you need to work with gloves, protective clothing with tightly buttoned sleeves, boots that cover your feet, and safety glasses.
Belt sander
It is called so because the sandpaper has the shape of a belt that moves continuously using rollers. That’s why such a wood grinder is also called “endless.”
The wood belt sander is designed for rough and intermediate surface leveling. By installing sandpaper with a finer grain, you can achieve a medium-finish finish. This is sufficient for joinery that cannot be painted. To bring it to perfect condition, you need a different type of wood sander. Moreover, to eliminate long longitudinal scratches, you will have to carry out step-by-step grinding, changing the grain size several times - the scratches remain deep.
A belt sander is good if you need to remove the old coating - paint and varnish
What are the benefits of a belt sander for wood? It has good performance. The tape on it is installed in such a way that one side allows you to sand close to the wall. What are its disadvantages? Due to the design, not all points can be “reached”. For example, corners, shaped recesses, grooves and other small parts. It is not always possible to “climb” between two parts (when processing railings, for example). Another drawback is that most belt sanders have a considerable weight, and it is difficult to work with them while sanding vertical surfaces. But on the horizontal plane they are the most productive.
The following disadvantages are a high noise level, not the largest grinding spot. It is so noisy that working without headphones is extremely uncomfortable. Why is there a small sanding spot when it looks quite large? Even with a large belt width, it grinds only in the center - the part in front and behind is not used due to the fact that it is raised to feed the rollers.
It can be turned into a grinding machine
The wood belt sander has some special features in its operation. To reduce the depth of the furrows it leaves, it must be driven along the fibers. Then finishing sanding takes less time. And one more thing - if you get lazy while working and leave the machine in one place for a long time, a solid “hole” will form. Despite this, this is the most productive wood sander that is often used.
Orbital (eccentric)
An orbital sander for wood has a round sole with Velcro, onto which sandpaper discs are attached. The discs are the same as for the grinder, so they are interchangeable. There are holes in the sole of the machine to remove dust. The dust is collected in a bag, a cassette-type container; almost all models allow you to connect a construction vacuum cleaner.
An eccentric sander allows you to process curved surfaces
The operation of an eccentric wood sander is based on simultaneous rotation and back-and-forth movement (reciprocating motion). This achieves a fairly good speed for intermediate and finishing wood processing. When working with this type of grinder, the platform moves in a spiral or orbit. That’s why these tools are also called orbital sanders.
Eccentric grinders are good for processing curved or profile surfaces - the machine is light in weight, makes little noise, is easy to control, and the angle of the disc allows you to reach recesses, notches, etc. With all this, she also processes large surfaces at a good pace. When installed, coarse-grain sandpaper can be used for both coarse and intermediate sanding. The speed is lower than that of the tape one, but still quite acceptable. There are such machines with different radius of movement (eccentricity) - from 3 to 8 mm. Selecting this parameter determines the main purpose (more on this below).
There are small and compact ones, there are powerful ones with decent dimensions.
The disadvantages of this type of machine are the inability to work in corners. The round platform simply does not fit there. Also, there is an area of uncertain sanding along the edges—it won’t be possible to sand close to a wall or vertical surface.
Vibrating
The vibratory sander pad can be rectangular or triangular. When working, it makes circular movements with a small amplitude - it vibrates, which gives this type of equipment its name. This wood sander is used for fine finishing - for varnishing or painting, but is characterized by low productivity.
A vibrating wood sander with a rectangular surface allows you to process large areas, but with its help it is not possible to sand wood near vertical planes and walls - it begins to hit the obstacle. In this regard, the triangular one is more suitable for working in corners and hard-to-reach places, but you still can’t fit it tightly to the wall.
Vibrating machine is used for finishing
Another disadvantage of vibration devices is the so-called “lamb”. If a grain of sand or other hard fragment gets under the surface, it leaves small circles on the wood - “lambs”. It is difficult to remove these marks. You have to use increasingly finer sandpaper, gradually removing scratches. But if in the process something gets under the sole again, the process is repeated again. Therefore, before work, the surface is thoroughly cleaned and a vacuum cleaner is usually connected to quickly and timely remove foreign fragments.
Oscillatory
Strictly speaking, this is not a sander, but it can be used for sanding. Moreover, those places that are inaccessible for other types of machines - corners (even sharp ones), places directly next to vertical walls. For grinding, a specially shaped triangular platform is installed on the tool, on which sandpaper on a self-adhesive base is fixed.
This is what a multifunctional renovator looks like, which has a grinding function
During operation, the platform moves in a horizontal plane with a very small amplitude - the vertices of the triangle deviate by approximately 1.7° (this is an average of 2.5 mm). Due to this small movement, grinding occurs. This machine can be used for sanding in corners and close to vertical surfaces. Moreover, you can remove not only wood, but also smeared and dried glue. In general, an oscillating machine is used for finishing grinding in hard-to-reach places - due to low productivity and the sanding spot, it is unrealistically long to process more or less large surfaces with it.
What type of sander to choose
To summarize, we can say that for housework and construction work, ideally you need two sanding machines - for rough and fine finishing. The most commonly used pair is tape + eccentric. If you are planning to start making furniture, then you cannot do without an oscillator.
If you do not like the result of the belt sander, you can purchase two orbital sanders with different eccentricities. For rough grinding, a tool with an eccentricity of 6-8 mm is suitable, for finishing grinding and even polishing - 2-4 mm. The only disadvantage of this solution is that good eccentric grinders are expensive.
If the budget is limited, and the farm has an angle grinder, rough grinding can be done with its help, and for intermediate or finishing use orbital or vibration. Just keep in mind that vibration is the least productive, although it is the cheapest. If possible, buy an orbital one - it is more versatile and gives better results.

Makita 3711
at prices starting from RUB 3,970.
Thanks to an effective system for removing dust from the work area and the presence of electronic adjustment of the oscillation frequency, the Makita 3711 model is deservedly popular among professionals.
It is difficult for an amateur to appreciate the potential of the Makita 3711. After all, after processing unassembled joinery, another device will be needed to clean the internal corners (its own 2 mm stroke does not allow working in the corners of three planes). Therefore, the combination of vibration amplitude, the area of the surface being processed, and the variable rate of vibration of the sole determine the narrow profile of the tool. It is designed for fine work with dissimilar materials, without volume restrictions. Main technical characteristics of Makita 3711

- a vacuum cleaner or dust collector is connected to the dust extractor,
- what grain fraction is on the abrasive paper used,
- how long did the master work today,
The instrument rests equally firmly on the sole and can be controlled effortlessly even with one hand.

Makita BO6040 models present in the arsenal
- 2 grinding options,
- speed stabilization system and soft start
- possibility of changing the speed of rotation of the sole,
directly indicate the versatility of the equipment. Rough and fine grinding of wood, metal and plastics, polishing paintwork on any of these materials is carried out quickly and efficiently.
In addition to the stated functionality, dust removal, carried out (by means of an impeller or an external vacuum cleaner) through holes in the sole, is also of considerable importance.
The vertical location of the engine and a properly balanced body and handles with rubberized inserts reduce the load on the user’s hands during long-term operation. The pile of the fastening system (“Velcro”) holds the abrasive sheet well at any speed and does not tend to become clogged with small particles, even when sanding gypsum-polymer coatings. FAQ
Which brand of grinder is best to buy?
+
Among power tool manufacturers, Bosch, Makita and DeWalt remain leaders in this area. We would also add Metabo, Einhell, and some Black+Decker models to them, although we rarely see the latter.
Many craftsmen take Interskol models for rare jobs and first acquaintance with the tool, especially since consumables for them are easier to find and they cost less. But if you are serious about wood processing, it is better to give preference to the manufacturers mentioned above.
What sandpaper is best to use?
+
It all depends on the type of work. For example, for rough primary grinding with a belt machine, coarse-grained sandpapers with a grain size of 200 microns and higher are used (according to new standards, they can be marked with indices from P22 to P60).
For further processing of wooden surfaces, the same belt or vibration sander can be used with medium-grain sandpaper of 100-150 microns (P100 or P120).
Sanding for painting (for example, with an eccentric machine) will require a smaller grain size: 40-70 microns for hard wood and 58-100 microns for soft wood.
Interskol UShM-230/2100M
at a price of 5,340 rub.
The declared potential and impressive appearance of the 230/2100 model indicate the advisability of using heavy angle grinders only by professional builders. This CMM is capable of:
- Cleaning deep cuts, from 6 mm wide
- rough grinding of planes and welded joints
- sawing metal structures and chipping concrete walls,
The main handle, which rotates (with locking) by 1800, allows you to work without reducing productivity in any position. The relatively low spindle speed does not affect the quality of work. It is designed in such a way that the optimal speed of movement of the abrasive edge (no more than 80 m/s) is maintained at the edges of the installed disk (D 230 mm).
Protection against accidental start-up provides an additional level of safety when operating heavy equipment.

Disc sanders
Typically, disc sanders are used for finishing surface grinding. The working element of this technique is a flat rotating disk on which an abrasive material is fixed.
Disc grinders are divided into:
- Angle grinders (angle grinders) are well-known manual grinders, as well as specialized “boot” machines. The design of an angle grinder has one disk rotating parallel to the axis of the tool.
- Disc surface grinders are large units with 1-3 disks rotating around their own and central axes.
Disc surface grinders
Disc grinders are equipped with one or three disks onto which abrasive wheels are attached. The discs rotate around their axis and thereby “smooth” the wooden surface. This operating principle, combined with a floating seating of the discs, allows for high-quality polishing of the surface after pre-treatment with belt or drum machines.
Angle grinders (angle grinders)
Angle grinders are an alternative to expensive surface grinders when processing small surfaces, as well as in hard-to-reach places - under radiators, pipes, in corners and niches, near baseboards and walls. The working surface of an angle grinder is a flat disk onto which an abrasive tool is mounted.
The most affordable angle grinder is the grinder. For rough grinding, flap wheels can be used. They consist of a rigid base on which strips of sandpaper are attached in a circle. Fine grinding is best done using a rubber attachment for Velcro wheels (of different grain sizes).
“Sapozhok” is another manual angle grinder. Its shape resembles a boot with a flat base, under which a grinding disc is hidden. Thanks to this design, the “boot” is very convenient for treating areas located close to walls, places under radiators or pipes.

How to choose a wood sander
When choosing a wood sander, you need to focus on a number of technical parameters. The performance of the unit, its weight and the dust protection system are important.
Power
The power ratings of wood sanders vary on average from 200-1200 W. Units with low productivity are used for simple repair work. If you are sanding hard wood with high resistance, it is better to take a machine with high power.
Dust removal function
When working with wood, a sander produces a large amount of sawdust. For intensive use, you should choose a model equipped with a garbage disposal or a connection pipe for connecting a powerful vacuum cleaner. In this case, right during use, the grinder will remove sawdust from the working surface.
Sander weight
The weight of a wood sander can vary between 1-3 kg. Heavy models are convenient for processing horizontal surfaces. But for sanding walls or ceilings, it is better to choose a lightweight device weighing no more than 1.5 kg.
What type of wood sander is best?
Belt and surface sanders are best suited for processing flat, wide wood surfaces. They allow you to quickly and efficiently polish frames and veneer panels. If you are going to process round logs, shaped furniture, or grooves and ends using the unit, you should choose an eccentric machine with a disk attachment or a corner model.
Which sander is best for wood at home?
In household use, a sanding machine is needed to solve simple problems - for processing floors, furniture and walls. You can choose one of the low-power models with a performance of 120-600 W.
The network cable of the device must be free to reach a convenient outlet. You need to make sure that your home sander is equipped with a dust removal system, otherwise cleaning up after polishing the wood will be quite difficult.
Grinders with smooth engine start are more reliable
Which sander is better to sand a wooden floor, timber, log house
For processing log houses, timber, floors, and also for lining, a belt-type wood sander is better. Devices from this category demonstrate good performance and speed, cope well with flat surfaces, and not only level, but also polish. If the walls of the house are made of logs, and it is necessary to preserve the relief texture, you should choose an eccentric machine with a disk attachment.
