Reviews of peat and compost toilets. Peat toilet.

Modern technologies are increasingly becoming part of our daily lives. For example, summer residents or owners of private houses everywhere are beginning to abandon traditional cesspools in favor of so-called dry closets. This is not surprising, because this equipment does not require sewerage equipment and does not require connection to other communications.

Due to the fact that such devices have not been widely available for sale for very long, not all users know how to correctly select similar products. It is for them that we decided to rank the best dry closets of the year. In today’s article we will take a detailed look at the useful characteristics of the most popular models on the market, and also provide a number of key rules on the basis of which you should purchase these products. This is probably where we'll start.

“I’ve had
Separett Villa for 3 years now, in the summer it’s generally great, no smell, no problems - 1 but you have to make sure that the liquid
fraction drainage pipe doesn’t get clogged, otherwise there will be a serious accident - the place where the bucket is installed will flood and that’s it, scooping it out is an awesome pleasure — I checked it the hard way (the pit on the street clogged due to a design error), after that there were no accidents! It works great in winter, nothing freezes in the pit , everything is great! There is no noise or smell at all (the smell appears in the summer near the house during the wind due to the side outlet of the ventilation pipe under the roof - this year I will raise the pipe higher! I use garbage bags and then throw the contents into the trash can (everything is relatively dry there and does not smell almost nothing), the garbage really stinks stronger =) When the power is turned off. I don’t bother with energy - I open the toilet and put the lid on the tank from the kit and that’s it =) There will be a battery this year. In short, as happy as an elephant.

Price

Equipment and manufacturers are the main factors influencing the cost of a wheelchair equipped with a toilet device for the home. The most expensive models are products from German manufacturers, which are equipped with a large number of devices. They facilitate the process of using a sanitary device by a disabled person himself without outside help. The cost of the offered models is 500 euros. The most affordable models are products from domestic manufacturers. They are offered at a price of 150 euros. However, in terms of equipment, the configurations of such dry toilets are more modest than those of foreign manufacturers.

I also use Piteko 505. I’ve adapted to spreading peat: I turn it smoothly in one direction or the other, and it falls asleep decently. The nuts have not yet been loosened, apparently the assembler was caught by a normal person and did not tighten the nuts. The container is also not very easy to remove, despite the cut in the lower pipe, but I have adapted: I don’t load more than half of the container, so it’s easier to get it out. Well, on the other hand, the managers offered me to buy the completely problem-free Biolet Multoa, but its price is such that I decided that for my change house Piteko 505 is an ideal option , even if sometimes I throw in peat with a scoop, the main thing is that there are no flies and no smell!

“I bought the same one over the weekend ( Piteco 506). I received a modification with a different handle for the peat spreader - as in Fig. in the passport (see photo). I don’t know if this is worse or better - I suspect that ’ll still have to throw the peat with a scoop . The plastic of the body and container seems a little flimsy. Ventilation pipes are included, you will have to come up with a replacement. So far the only thing that comes to mind is to buy a 75mm sewer pipe. Maybe there are some other options? Although the first elbow will have to be left if the internal container cannot be pulled out without moving it, as SergeyAS writes.”

DOMETIC CTW 4110

The dry closet model has a storage capacity of 19 liters. And the lower container has a special fill level indicator, which will allow you to control the timely emptying of the waste tank. The draining process is carried out using a water flush with a vacuum valve. The dry closet is made of high-quality materials and also has a ceramic insert that is scratch-resistant.

Pros:

  1. Quality materials;
  2. Convenience and comfort;
  3. Modern appearance;
  4. Optimal height;
  5. The storage tank has wheels;
  6. The bowl rotates 90 degrees;
  7. The set includes an additional cassette and a service hatch.

“I can share my impressions of Ekomatic during the season. It is located on my veranda at home, I made a separate small booth there, I ’m tired of running outside, especially in the morning and when it’s raining or frozen . Start of operation on May 9 this year. us used it mainly on weekends and vacations, and sometimes friends came over . In the hot summer there were no smells on the veranda, but in the cabin itself there was sometimes a slight smell of ammonia and to remove it I bought an automatic air freshener, which works every time you visit this device. I emptied it twice a season , the first time in August, and the second time before the dacha season closed for the November holidays, I decided not to leave this “good” until spring. When I took it out for the first time, it was 2/3 full, it weighs quite a bit, but my wife and I easily loaded it onto a wheelbarrow and took it to the compost heap , there was no smell of crap, just a couple of drops dripped from the drain hole of the drainage hose. As for the consumption of peat and sawdust, at first the consumption was decent, but then I started pouring no more than 1/4 into the tank and turning the handle no more than half a turn. I can sum it up, this is my personal opinion, of the advantages, does not require frequent removal compared to a bucket, it can be placed in a living room, there is no smell and you don’t have to put on cotton pants or a raincoat in the morning to run to it (if you manage to run there). The only downside I see is that it still needs to be taken out and emptied. In general, I’m completely satisfied with the toilet, and I’m not the only one.”

Ten best models of dry toilets

10. Separett Camping 1165

An excellent solution for a good outdoor recreation at a considerable distance from the conveniences of civilization, and the arrangement of this toilet will take a minimum of time and effort. This is a rather original design that does not require any water for flushing, and also does not require the additional purchase of consumables such as liquids for breaking down waste. This model is a folding product that is very convenient to transport to any place. The product is produced according to the standard scheme of composting dry closets. Solid and liquid waste are not mixed in it, which allows the product capacity to be significantly higher and prevents the formation of unpleasant odors. The device is absolutely safe for the environment. The set includes a special fabric bag for easy storage and carrying.

It is worth noting that waste is not processed here: liquid waste passes through a special filter element and is discharged into the environment through a hose, while solid waste enters a biodegradable bag. Once it is full, it is removed and thrown into a regular compost pit. The volume of the waste tank is as much as 23 liters, so the bag takes a long time to fill. The seat height is 54.1 cm – quite comfortable for an adult.

Advantages:

  • Does not require water or sewerage;
  • No need to purchase consumables;
  • Absolutely safe for the environment;
  • The waste can be used as fertilizer;
  • Features excellent capacity;
  • Reasonable cost;
  • Foldable design.

9. Thetford Porta Potti 565E

The products stand out not only with their rather original design, but also with their seat height and shape. The seat surface has a significant area, so this toilet will be suitable for a person of any age. The design includes a control panel equipped with a pump, a filling block, and there is also a level indicator for the drain tank, which is located near another indicator that notifies you about the degree of fullness of the drain tank. The model has a built-in toilet paper holder. The design is two-part: a flush cistern connected to a small toilet, which has a removable seat and lid. The lower section is a waste tank. Sections are easy to separate if necessary. To do this, there is a latch on the back of the unit. The drain tank is equipped with a pipe, so emptying it is also very simple.

There is no need to clean individual parts. The drain tank has a pressure release button, so there will be no splashing when emptying. There is a clamp here that holds the pipe in one place. The manual piston pump is easy to use and allows for efficient flushing of waste. Depending on the modification, an electric pump powered by batteries can be installed, and one set of them will be enough for about 700 flushes.

Advantages:

  • Convenient and easy to use design;
  • Easy to separate sections;
  • Excellent workmanship and assembly quality;
  • The device is equipped with a comfortable seat for all ages.

Flaws:

  • Special liquid will be quite expensive.

Thetford Porta Potti 565E

Thetford Porta Potti Qube 145

It has a body made of high-strength plastic. Like the previous model, the design of this dry toilet consists of two parts: the upper one is a tank with flushing fluid and the toilet bowl, the lower one is a waste tank into which disinfectant is poured. The waste breaks down very quickly and takes up minimal space, so you won’t have to empty the tank too often. If two or three people use the device, cleaning will be done on average once a week. This operation is easy to perform: turn off the lower tank, open the pipe and drain the accumulated substances into a special place for disposal of biological waste.

The products are characterized by convenient operation and a high level of reliability. This dry toilet will be well suited for small children, as its seat is not very high. The device is small in size, so it is easy to transport from one place to another. The lid has a secure lock so you don’t have to worry about it opening during transportation. The developers carefully thought out the flushing system - when using a special pump, a minimum amount of liquid is wasted. The pump itself operates using a special pump, which even a child can use. There are no unpleasant odors when using this device.

Advantages:

  • Insignificant mass;
  • Compact overall dimensions;
  • Easy to use;
  • Great for all ages.
  • No foreign or unpleasant odors are formed during use;
  • Attractive design.

Flaws:

  • The lever used to separate the elements of the device is very tight.

Another very budget-friendly solution for ensuring complete recreation in nature or while traveling. The design is portable in size, making it also suitable for caring for people with limited mobility. This is a Canadian-made model, made in the form of two sections: an upper tank with a seat and a lower storage tank. The volume of the first is 10 liters, the second is 20 liters. The container for draining sewage is emptied and cleaned with ease due to the presence of a convenient pipe, additionally equipped with a manual pump. The product is designed for constant use by 3-4 people. A special liquid that breaks down waste will have to be poured into the drain tank. The height of the device is only 42 cm, so even children can easily use it. The body has convenient handles for carrying the structure. The volume of the upper tank is designed for approximately 45 flushes.

It is recommended to pour the contents of the lower compartment into the drain hole. The design is completely autonomous, but there is no indication of tank fullness. The main part is quite durable, characterized by an increased level of strength and good resistance to corrosion processes. The design has a drain valve that prevents liquid and unpleasant odors from leaving the drain tank.

  • The body of the product, including the storage tank, is made of special polystyrene, which perfectly resists low temperatures;
  • There is no need to connect the product to the electrical network or water supply;
  • Economical water consumption for flushing;
  • A drain valve is provided to prevent unpleasant odors.

The operation of this equipment is ensured exclusively using environmentally safe materials. A compost-type filler is poured into the container where the sewage arrives, and a special humus catalyst is also added. These compositions are thoroughly mixed until a homogeneous mixture is obtained, where decomposition processes are immediately activated. The engine starts up after the feces arrive and mixes them with the compost, providing constant access to oxygen. The lower part of the container, where waste is processed, is a grate through which dry humus is poured into a tray. Recycled waste can be placed in a compost bin. The design is also equipped with heating, which will create an optimal environment for bacteria responsible for rotting processes.

Advantages:

  • Ease of use;
  • Recycled waste can be used as fertilizer;
  • Long service life;
  • Comfortable to use.

Flaws:

  • It is necessary to consider connecting to a power source and providing a ventilation system.

Biolet 25

Separett Villa 9000

Another Swedish product. The body of this dry closet is made of high-quality plastic, which can perfectly withstand low temperatures. Both compartments are made of polished polystyrene, which can withstand significant physical abuse. The seat is covered with a layer of polypropylene, which can well resist wet and aggressive environments. When installing this design, it should be taken into account that in order to fully use it, you will have to connect the model to the power supply, since there is a built-in fan that cannot be turned off in order to maintain clean air in the room. It works absolutely silently. The overall dimensions of the structure are small: 541 mm in height, 456 mm in width and 672 mm in depth with a total empty weight of 13 kg. The capacity of the lower tank is 23 liters.

Such a dry closet will not cost too much and will be very useful in places where there is no running water or sewer system. People of all ages can use this equipment. The design looks quite aesthetically pleasing; outwardly it is practically no different from standard toilets.

Advantages:

  • Decent storage tank capacity;
  • Reasonable cost;
  • Safe for the environment - no need to add chemicals to decompose waste;
  • There is not the slightest hint of an unpleasant odor.

Flaws:

  • The need for ventilation and electrical connections.

The leader in our review of the best dry closets was one of the most compact liquid-type models, which was developed by engineers of a Dutch company and first appeared on the market at the very beginning of last year. The structure of the product is quite simple, so any family member can use it - from a small child to an elderly person. The biotoilet copes quite effectively with the function of processing feces. The body of the structure is made of high-strength plastic, so the unit can withstand loads of up to 150 kg. The toilet is arranged in a standard way – the developers haven’t come up with anything new in this area: two containers, a bowl and a seat. You can wash off the waste using a special pump. The lower tank is closed with a special damper, which blocks foreign odors.

There is a special indicator indicating that the drain tank is full and needs to be emptied. A special pipe is provided for this process. There is no need to disassemble the structure and clean its elements separately. The toilet has a pressure release button to prevent the contents from splashing out. The volume of the lower tank is 21 liters - for two people this parameter is enough for about a week. The structure can be used in a temperature range from -40 to +60 degrees. Review:

Impressions from the first day of using the latest model of the Compact-Premium peat dry closet : + sit comfortably - you need to ask the manufacturer to fill the flush/fill tank with peat, because you are unlikely to succeed (especially considering that the peat sold is damp and likes to stick together) ... so a bucket of peat + a scoop - RULES + odors (after filling up big things) - no, after small things you don’t have to pour it in - declared peat consumption (1 bag 7 kg for 2 people per season) - lie... I don’t know how to put it mildly: first there is a mound at the bottom, a mound in the tank, and then sprinkle your work, in general, from 3 purchased 7-kg bags for 20 hours of stay 1.5 bags left - a spinner for filling - nonsense, because... in the tank on the far wall the peat sticks together and hello... you have to knock on the tank My rating is 4

  1. High price.

Review:

I have been using Ecomatic for several years now. Fine.

Proper use involves the use of peat. It must be placed in a special compartment. You twist the handle and the peat inside crumbles into an even layer. Beauty ! You can take the same peat with your hand (with a scoop) and aim it inside. This way, by the way, less peat is consumed. When the peat runs out, you can use sawdust. (the best results were obtained from a mixture of poplar and birch sawdust). In this case, the use will not be entirely correct. But you don't need to buy anything. A slight smell may appear (this is understandable - sawdust is not peat). Although it all depends on the specific users. And from what they ate. About the flies. The appearance depends on the frequency of removal of the contents and the weather. For some reason there are no flies in winter. By the way, about winter. In winter, the contents of the container freeze safely. Peat in a special compartment too. Therefore, it is better to use your hand or a scoop. Thaws in the spring. Well, or a thaw will happen. So be sure to empty it before the cold weather. After emptying, I rinse with water. I just rinse. Cleans up well. The plastic is slippery and nothing sticks to it much. Overall I'm happy. PS For the sake of experiment, I added waste from the coffee machine. The result is great. You open the lid and it smells like coffee! Another plus of the toilet is that it works on any raw material - peat, sawdust, coffee waste...

How to correctly choose the optimal dry closet?

All similar designs are divided into three main groups - liquid, peat and electric. They differ from each other in the principle of operation, as well as in some operational characteristics. Liquid devices are compact in size and have a sealed container. Depending on the liquid used, they can be formaldehyde, ammonium and bacterial. Formaldehyde dry closets are some of the cheapest on the market, but they use a fairly toxic liquid. It is strictly prohibited to pour waste from such a device directly on the site or near water bodies, so the disposal method must be thought out in advance.

Ammonium is safer; the liquid they contain will decompose on its own into environmentally friendly compounds within about a week. Bacterial dry toilets are the most environmentally friendly. They include colonies of active bacteria, so waste from such a toilet can later be used as fertilizer on the site. A liquid dry toilet consists of two main elements: a toilet bowl and a storage tank itself, in which waste will be broken down without releasing gas. Such structures are compact in size and completely sealed.

In a peat dry closet, waste is processed by bacteria contained in the peat itself. There is a special dispenser where consumables are poured. If necessary, it will cover the waste evenly. It is advisable to install such a structure in a separate room or a special extension, since it will need to be equipped with an exhaust pipe. The mixture is used efficiently and economically here. After processing, the waste does not become toxic, so it can be added to humus or compost.

It is most convenient to use electric dry closets, but you should first think about where and how they will be connected to the network. These models are equipped with a fan and compressor. In the storage tank, solid and liquid fractions are separated. Liquids are removed through a hose, and solids are thoroughly dried to a powdery state and placed in a storage container. It is worth noting that these models are the most expensive. It is advisable that any dry closet be equipped with a tank full indicator. Be sure to pay attention to the volume of the storage tank and overall dimensions of the product.

When we selected the models to include in our ranking, we were mainly guided by all the principles discussed above, as well as taking into account value for money and user reviews. We tried to include not the most expensive models in the rating, so that each of our readers could choose the most suitable product in all respects.
